took a 2 hour drive down the coast and then hiked up to see the franz josef glacier today. more pouring rain. hopefully all my gear will be dry enough to wear tomorrow -- we're hoping to take a glacier hiking tour to the fox glacier in the morning.
staying in the montrose backpackers hostel for the next two nights. might add an extra night if the weather turns better. we managed to score a room to ourselves, rather than staying the the 10-person dorms... (phew...)
tried some new junk food today: chicken flavoured chips and a "pinky bar" (i even took a picture for kim). the chips were tasty, although my stomach is starting to disagree. the picky bar, on the other hand, was just a mash of pink marshmallows and caramel. hope i'll stay healthy...
