The Heli Hike After a glorious day at Wanaka, the Murphy's Law of Weather in New Zealand struck again: it rained all night, so unsurprisingly our 8am heli hike was cancelled. We refrained from doing a sundance, but luckily the cloud lifted late morning and our midday take-off was confirmed. After a safety briefing about boarding and exiting helicoptors, we jumped in the chopper for our flight over the glacier. It was a really exhilirating ride, flying through cloud mists into the mountains and the view of the glacier from above was amazing! We landed on our makeshift helipad on the ice and looked up to the stunning neve - the top of the glacier above us. We strapped on crampons and teetered across the ice, reassured by the hefty hold of the spikes. Graham and ... read more

The glacier gods were with us. Typically weather on the glaciers is cloudy and often raining, but not today. We awoke to a beautiful, almost cloudless day to walk up onto the Fox Glacier. We dressed up warmly (and after a fine flat white), headed out on a 4 hour guided tour - aptly named the "Fox Trot". We were bused to the foot of the glacier on rickety old vehicles which are advertised as "historic buses". It was an hour and half climb up the gorge to reach the glacier through ferns and regenerating temperate rainforest. It was quite a climb (including more than 500 formed steps). It was hard going, but everyone made it up without complaint. From high on the track the view of the glacier and its upper and lower icefalls was ... read more

Day 15 - Sunday - Travelled all day and travelled through Arthurs Pass where Tim took some photos of a Kia Parrot. Arrived in Fox Glacier where we went for a walk up to the Fox Glacier - it was huge. We had arrived late and since its the middle of winter there wasn't much open in this little place. We had tea in the hotels restaurant before having an early night! We seem to be getting up each morning at 6.30am! Day 16 - Monday - Fantastic day! We got up and had our breakfast early as we were going on a helicopter! We were all excited as we flew up the Franz Glacier right up to the top and landed! We crunched in the snow and had a snowball fight. Dad took some photos. ... read more

We woke up early to shower and do some shopping before driving down to Glacier country. There was a sweet little bakery across the street- we picked fresh hot buns and other treats to take south. I picked out a quiche for $3 and an apple strudel for $3, and then grabbed $8 worth of fruit and yogurt- and Cadbury chocolate- at the New World Market. (The chocolate and dairy are so good here!) It took us about 2 hours to cruise to Franz Josef glacier. We looked in the shops, and had a picnic lunch on freezing cold picnic tables before checking in for our guided hike. They layered us in wool socks, boots, Gore-Tex pants and coats, and even hats and mittens before loading us on the bright red bus. We drove to ... read more

Adrenaline. That's the name of the game. Been a good few days in the icy wastelands of the south island dicing with death, staring danger in the face and living to tell the tale over a nice pint of Monteith's Original Ale. It all began in the warm surroundings of the very familiar sounding Scruffy Murphy's pub in Wanaka where we had a pizza and drink each for the princely sum of 9 English pounds between us. Excellent value. The night was cold again but we were expecting it this time and hunkered down in warm clothing and double duvet so it was all good. Headed off into the mountains with the mist still clinging to the ground. The plan was to get over the very tall and icy Haast Pass and down the other side ... read more

There are two large glaciers on the west coast of the south island, huge lumps of ice that terminate in the rain forest. We decided to go on an guided hike on the Fox glacier. We were given boots and crampons to fit onto them before heading up to the glacier. This caused confusion and one guy tried to put his crampons on sharp edges up! Crampons fitted we took them off again and set off on an uphill walk along the side of the glacier, as the access point to the ice was about a third of the way up. This was quite tiring, but luckily turned out to be the most difficult part of the day. The first part of the glacier was really cool. Steps had been carved into the ice from ... read more

The Copeland Track is a tramp (Kiwi for a hike) that heads directly inland from the west coast, crossing the Southern Alps via the Copeland Pass and passing into Mt Cook National Park. At this time of year it’s a full-on alpine trek, requiring ice axe and crampons to go the full 50kms or so across the Main Divide. We were just going for the relatively easily accessible Welcome Flat Hut, 17km’s in and with the incentive of free hot pools when we got there! Having been warned by the DOC (Dept. of Conservation) warden at Franz that some cars left at the track start had been broken into recently, we were paranoid about leaving the truck and all our possessions. We decided to drive 500m down the road and head off down a random gravel ... read more

I left Queenstown in beautiful weather with the two kids from the hostel and drove to Wanaka on a tiny winding road that ridiculously claimed to be two ways. How people have enough courage (or perhaps false bravado) to attempt this in winter conditions is beyond me. Well actually, if the snow condions on the ski hill were good enough I could be convinced to try some incredibly silly things myself... I nixed the plan to stay in Wanaka due to an oversaturation of ski town mentality. So, after dropping off the ski kids I'd met in the last hostel, I said goodbye to the Xanadu of the ski world and continued driving north. There wasn't much for the next 200 kilometers, but I knew I could at least make it to a small town ... read more

We embarked on our whole day ice trek called the 'Nimble Fox' to explore the pinnacles of the Fox Glacier. Armed with all our gear, a group of eight made a long hilly walk to the glacier face - crossing mountainous terrain, with a few views of waterfalls along the way. There are only three places in the world where temperate rainforest vegetation meets glaciers, this includes Fox & Franz Josef - both found in South Island and also one in Argentina. This region has many earthquakes, and so the glaciers are always changing and evolving. We made our way onto the cold-blue ice, and to begin with we were able to use the route already created by the 1/2 day morning group. Until we reached the steeper terrain, then we followed our guide as he ... read more

We made our way towards the Fox Glacier, first stopping at Ship Creek. This is a beautiful temperate rainforest walk, with lots of palms, phormiums, ferns, and the tree called the Kahikatea which is New Zealand's tallest native tree, on average 60 metres in height. Then we viewed the rugged beach and sand dunes, whilst the Fantails flew around us. We stopped off at numerous viewpoints before reaching the entrance to the Fox Glacier. Magnificent blue-white razor-sharp ice pinnacles standing on end below the dominating huge mountains, with Mt Tasman in the distant view. Then we travelled on to Franz Josef, to walk to the glacier viewpoint. Slightly different to Fox, but equally impressive. After we decided to watch the The Edge film, incorporating helicopter views of the stunning NZ scenery. This was mainly to shelter ... read more
