Christchurch is the largest city (population of 300,000) on the South Island. The city itself has few attractions to mention but its conservative face and chilled out atmosphere make it an interesting place to while away a few days. I can't say we did much here except chill out in some cafés, went for walks in Hagley park and explored the main streets. The New Zealand Air Force has a well put together museum on the history of the air force with the various aircraft spanning its history on display. One of the coolest things they had was a flight simulator set up in the cockpit of a WWII mosquito and turrets from a Lancaster bomber so you could experience what it was like to be a gunner in one of these planes during the Second World War. There was a great recreation of what a typical New Zealand home looked like during the war and you could walk from room to room.
