Well well well...look who it is

Lesson of the day: Beer contains trace amounts of a substance that makes one hate the site of their own money. The results of this are often discovered through blood shot eyes the next morning, when one looks at an empty wallet.
Well the hand clan has finally broken up, as the parents return to the great white north (single tear). With their early departure, I too realized that I had to geat ready to leave, as I had a flight later that afternoon to christchurch in the south island. With an insanely heavy pack I trudged to the airport and made my escape. Once again I shook the hand of turbulence on my flight but I was slowly getting better, as this had been my 5 or 6 flight in only a few weeks. Within minutes of my arrival in Christchuch I realized I would come to enjoy this place for the next week or so as the streets were lined with bars and tons of fellow backpackers. Later that afternoon I met up with Ryan Lutz as we had planned to do some travelling together and see
what this place called NZ had to offer. Well once again I had to make sure that beer was still up to par in this country as we found a bar still in the midst of happy hour serving the good stuff (aka beer) for dirt cheap. Many many pints later we decided to go find another bar to drink at... stoping next at a bar servings beer towers for 25 bucks... now I dont know what we were thinking there, as we were both stuffed full of beer already but we still finished her off like champs before heading down the street to see if other bars were up to snuff.... The next morning I came to the realization that having booked my hostel for only one night had been a terrible move on my part as i was forced to vacate by 10 am..having only gone to bed a few hours before...

Moved into Lutz's hostel down the road for a painful 23 dollars a night (expensive eh?). Today we both decided to stay clear of the bar scene and check out the sights and sounds of christchurch. Reminding me much of London this
little town is very centrilized and surrounded by huge parks and botanical gardens, while free buses chris crossed around the city. After a couple hours seeing the sights, we grabbed some cheap food, traded a few stories with our Swedish roommates and then called it quits on the day.

Lesson of the day: Surfing rocks...plain and simple
Well I had waited for this day for a long time and now it had finally come! After waking up early...well 10ish, Lutz and I made our way to his friends, doug and dan's, hostel just down the road from us. From there we were headed to the coast for some surf lessons in a little beach town called sumner (I think). Through the bus window I caught a few glances of white caps on the horizon and I knew this was not going to be just another run of the mill day. For 60$ Lutz and I had purchased 4 hours in the crashing surf.... Our instructor took us through the motions and within minutes we were suited up (full body wetsuits) with a board in our hands. Though the waves looked good we were told this
was going to be a tough day to learn as the waves were breaking early due to the offshore breeze. But it really didnt matter in the end as we still managed to get up and catch some waves. Now for anyone whos been with me up to Tylers cottage and seen my reaction when a piece of seaweed touches my foot, knows that I am not a fan of the stuff as it can easily be confused with the caress of a sea snake. Well today was a true test in how much i could take of seaweed as there were huge fields of it that had been churned up by the waves. It actually got kind of annoying at parts as your line, which connected your foot to the board would become completely entangled in the stuff making it almost impossible to jump out of the water when trying to catch a wave... but eventually i got passed it. During the 3 hours I stayed in the water I managed to catch 3 great waves which was awesome but far harder to do then I had thought... but I guess thats what practice is all about.

Lesson of the day: See Jan 2nd lesson of the day
Today was super bowl day and Lutz a I made the most of it. We met up with doug and Dan and what can only be described as the best bar ever made. Named the Holy Grail this place was made to watch sports as its 3 levels faced a huge move screen where the game was to be shown...from this vantage point I took in the sites and sounds and gave the beer taps a run for their money. I dont really remember everything that happened after that but I do remember meeting people and being places.... the night was to end by locating the back my throat with two of my fingers
