Elephants!Elephants!Elephants!

And just a quick one from Laos...
G'day!

Oh no, hang on, we're not in Australia anymore! We have now been in the lovely South Island of New Zealand for 3 days and are pleased to report that it is absolutely great here! Despite dire weather predictions it has been a steady 30 degrees or so, with a nice breeze. Nice change after Australia which appears to have fooled the world with reports of it's sunny nature :-)

We have checked into a nice hostel. Thank the good lords. We should have realised that anything described in the Lonely Planet as 'trendy' would lead to bad things for two apparent old fogeys like the two of us. Funny how things that are fun at 18 - for example running around corridors at 5 in the morning shouting 'We're all going to the bar' in a conga style - are no as amusing at 28 and 29 respectively... Note for anyone travelling to Sydney - avoid the Wake Up hostel. It is true to it's name.

The flight over was interesting, although enough to put you off the idea of having a baby for life after 3 hours of hysterical screaming one row ahead of us... But moving on, we flew in over the southern alps as we came into Christchurch and now can't wait to head that way ourselves tomorrow! They are absolutely beautiful, snow capped but with enormous turquoise blue lakes in between them all. Enough to make us feel quite poetic!

We have spent our few days in Christchurch relaxing, riding a gondola up to the peak, taking a tram around the centre, rowing on the river and generally feeling as though we are in England (but with better weather and great wine). What could be better? We have just added up the various modes of transport we have used in our holiday and have come to a total of 22 ranging from funicular railways to sky trains. (OK, it was a quiet afternoon, you need to do something to occupy yourself)

Anyway, we have FINALLY worked out how to get pictures onto the computer (find a PC with a broadband connection seems to be the way to go...) so here are a few highlights from our 2 weeks in Australia - and one from Laos too!
