Christchurch is a pleasent city which has a lot of pleasent english gothic revival style victorian buildings; it also has a lot of shockingly bad ones as all NZ cities do due to the development of their CBDs during the 1980s. There is never a road in any of the CBDs in NZ cities that is composed of entirley pleasent buildings.

The most impressive is the large arts centre which houses various galleries, workshops, cafes and shops. It is the former university campus and is most attractive.

I also visited Akaroa which was a French settlement on Banks Peninsula. It retains its frnch street names and sits beatifully in the natural harbor. I visited colonial chapels, old houses , the museum and the libarary - definately a good day trip if you are visiting Christchurch.
