At Frans Josef I stayed for only one night. The morning when I left it rained like it would never stop. I heard Frans Josef and the surroundings get six metres of rain a year. But after leaving the west side of the south Island and moving up north, the sun started shining again. It was a long ten hour bus ride to get to Nelson. The bus stopped for a hour at Greymouth which was a nice break in between to walk around and have lunch. Than in the afternoon I had a break at the town Punakaiki. There are amazing rocks and cliffs around the sea who are called ‘the pancake rocks’. They are shaped like you have a pile of pancakes that are curved by the erosion of the sea. At Nelson I stayed for a couple of days, but I took it easy because I was not completely fit. That must be because of the cold in Dunedin, Queenstown and Wanaka. So I ate lots of fruit, yogurt, vegetables, Echinacea tablets and had a lot of sleep. Eventually after that I felt much better. Nelson has a nice vibe. People are very friendly and it is a
peaceful town with a nice bay along the coast. After Nelson I went by bus to Picton and took the same day the Ferry to Wellington at the North Island. It was nice to be in a big city again. At these moment I realize that I am really a city person. Of course I enjoy nature a lot and can’t live without it, but being around lots of different people and the creativity just attracts me. The thing I liked the most was to attend a rugby match in the Westpac stadium. I was just walking around exploring the city and noticed people all walking in the same direction. So I thought let’s follow them and see where they are going. The painted faces and the shirts already gave me a clue that there was going to be a match but I didn’t know which sport. It was easy to buy a ticket after standing in line for fifteen minutes and there I was sitting in between all the supporters of the blue team. During the game the people around me were shouting: Smash him!! Break his $*#..... It was fun to see the game and it was exciting
Beach at New Plymouth
The black beach is formed due to volcanic sand. because both teams were really challenging eachother. Eventually my team (the blue one) lost and people were leaving with sad faces and I was joining them to the exit. Although I had to hide the smile on my face of watching it all. Another thing I enjoyed was going to the film archives. I saw a documentary about volcanos in New Zealand. This country is formed by two plates, the Oceanic plate and the Australian plate that are colliding eachother. It form the amazing landscape New Zealand has to offer.
After Wellington I went to New Plymouth. The same evening I saw the stars with on the background the music of the waves of the sea plunging on the beach. At moments like that I feel to be so lucky to be travelling and have the opportunity to visit places like that. The next day I did a walking track through the forest and along a river. This time I had only one other roommate. I am always staying in dorms and share my room with two to eight other people. In Wellington I shared the room with seven people of different nationalities. In New Plymouth I shared the room with only with one guy from Canada. Sometimes I get lucky and sleep for a night alone in a room when they don’t put other people in. Those are the best sleeps and I can really appreciate those moment. Although I don’t mind sharing my room with others it can be a relieve having one for myself some times.
