If anyone tells you that Rotorua has an unbearable stink - then don’t believe them. We think it’s fine. I mean, it’s nowhere near as bad as the smell in our house the morning after we’ve had a night on the curry and lager, and that’s a fact. The Maori used to use the bird baths to catch pigeons for food. They would fil them with water then place little nooses inside, so that when the pigeons would take a drink they then couldn't get their heads back out the noose - thus caught for dinner!

This is the man explaining how he's going to have to add DAZ flakes or some other type of soap powder to help speed up the process for the eruption. The geyser has an eruption pattern of between 24 and 72 hours, but they add some soapy stuff to help make it go off at 10:15am each day (and thus get the tourists in)

The eruption lasts for about an hour and the height of the initial water spurt is approx 15m, although it decreases significantly after about 5 mins.

There are heaps of other minerals and poisons in this lake of 74 degrees, including the obligatory sulphur, plus silver, gold, mercury, arsenic and thalium. The bubbles are caused by carbon dioxide.

What an amazing colour. It's a result of excess water from the Champange pool mixing with sulphur and ferrous salts. Sometimes its more yellow than green depending on the amount of light reflected. In the 'flesh' this lake was flourescent lime green.

At Wai-O-Tapu, Alan bought a BOWL of coffee. Check the size of it next to a regular cup of coffee. He was buzzing for the rest of the day.
