Hello Well i'm now in my last week in New Zealand.. I head down to Christchurch on saturday and fly out on sunday to fiji. It'll be weird being in another country after being here for so long. Over the last month i spent 3 weeks helping out in christian conference centres in rotorua and Taupo and that was fun... also handy as i didn't have to pay for anything so that was pretty handy. There isn't much else to say really... So i won't bother but, i thort i ought to do a farewell to New zealand blog.. hopefully i'll keep them more up to date in the next 2 months as i'll be seeing more places! Any way hope that all is good with everyone. Enjoy ... read more

The day after the wedding, we had breakfast with Judy and Gregor and John and Vera and then headed south. Judy kindly gave us a key to their self-contained annex so we could stay in Parmaston North overnight. The journey was very scenic (and included the desert road). Matt bravely let Emma drive as he had obviously eaten something that disagreed with him at the wedding, so he wasn't feeling very well (consequently we had to make a few unscheduled road-side stops along the way, much to Emma's disgust). As it was Easter Sunday most shops and places were shut when we arrived in PN, so we dined in on takeway pizza, wedges and ice cream - authentic NZ fare. ... read more

Quite a long drive but worth is as it gave us the opportunity of catching up with relatives in Hamilton. Thanks for a great night Penny, Sandy and Marshall. You too, Becca and Mark. The meal was fabulous, the company even better. Special thanks to Penny for looking after us so well especially considering she’s about to add a new member to the family. Be sure to let us know how everything goes, guys. Apart from the opportunity for Len to catch up with rellies he hasn’t seen for 20 years (yes it has been that long) is was brilliant to spend some time in a warm family environment where we didn’t need to be constantly on our guard. Thanks Heaps again guys. And Sandy, I know Len really enjoyed the catch up and is already ... read more

Parmaston North to Gisbourne via Napier Now it was hit the road for Napier about 2 hour drive .Napier’s claim to fame was in 1931 it was shaken to the ground by an earthquake 7.9 on the Richter scale, much of the town was destroyed. Napier found itself 40sq klms larger afterwards as the earthquake had lifted the seabed 2metres .That’s when Napier rose again like the phoenix and started rebuilding its Art Deco Architecture. I arrived at about 13-30 to find all the people were dressed in 1930’s clothes (flapper dresses and bowers and chic hats men in boaters and white suits loads of vintage cars on display anyone who was anyone got out the very finest bone china and picnicked on the beach, the champagne would flow, veteran planes would be flying over and ... read more

After reading the entry about our rental car mishap is Auckland, several of you have requested photos of the Pulsar in all of its glory. As a result, Gina and I decided to shoot a spread for Kiwi Hot Rods and Honeys. Enjoy. As Gene and I made our way to our hotel in the small town of Palmerston North, Gene muttered, “Had I known, I would have driven straight through this place.” As we checked in to our hotel, Gene told the woman at the front desk that there must have been an error as we had only booked the room for one night, not two as the confirmation sheet had indicated. The lady, however, reassured us that reservations were made in advance for two nights. Still unconvinced that he would have booked us two nights in some Podunk town, Gene pulled out his laptop, loaded the computer and consulted his calendar. Lucky us. We were stuck in Palmerston North for two nights. Palmerston North is a university town. However, outside of the university, there is nothing much ... read more

Thusday Palmerston North is a surprisingly flat place. It's also a surprisingly functional yet wholly unintersting place as Glynn and I found out on our first excursion into our latest Kiwi city. After enjoying a lovely long lie-in on our first day, we eventually made it to breakfast just before midday. Tina then dropped us off in the city centre and we went about our business of exploring the surrounding area. It was nice to be back in a place with a bit more 'everyday' life after the more touristy spots of Rotorua and Taupo and we happily ambled around the many shops for a few hours, testing our window shopping skills to the max. The highlight of our day in town was endulging in a big bag of chups. Yep, it was that exciting! After ... read more

Bus travel in New Zealand has been pretty painless so far and today was no exception. We've been surprised in fact at just how straighforward it's been and how lovely and quiet the roads are. Even the motorways, which in English terms are nothing more than single carriageway A-class roads with the occasional spot for overtaking, have barely any traffic on them. It's a refreshing change from all the hustle and bustle of Asian roads as well as the roads back home, that's for sure. We couldn't reserve seats on the morning bus as it was all booked out so we checked out of our room at the Rainbow Lodge and squeezed in another couple of episodes of Battlestar Galactica before slowly making our way to the bus terminal for our 4.45pm departure. We arrived bang ... read more

Palmerston North is not exactly high on the tourist circuit, in fact it's not on the tourist circuit at all. However some of the people from the hostel in Melbourne came from here and we had arranged to meet them for a while. Our meeting point was the Kentucky Fried Chicken of all places as, like McDonalds, these places are not exactly hard to find. I love the subtle way that they try to blend their so called restaurants into the surroundings! We were then given the guided tour, which consisted mainly of various pubs. The climax of the tour was a club that was $20 to get in and then all the drinks were free. That just about sums up our time in Palmerston North - if you find a winning formula stick with it. ... read more
