I left the dead guy in a coffin back in Kerikeri and headed north to Kaitaia (exciting start, isn’t it?). What can I say about Kaitaia? As I’m trying to keep bit this short: not much. It is primarily a base for the nationally famous Cape Reinga tours and as this is what I wanted to do, I made my way to its starting point. Cape Reinga is one of the most northerly points in New Zealand. Not the most northerly point. This lies elsewhere, presumably to the north. However the cape does have a picturesque lighthouse which the other spot does not; hence, everyone heads to Cape Reinga. From the craggy outcrop it is possible to view where the Abel Tasman Sea meets the mighty Pacific Ocean. A distinctive line can be seen where the ... read more

me, lucy and Danny left Auckland at about 12 in the afternoon, with a plan to get to Whangarei by the early evening and stay there the night. Along the drive we planned to go to the Waipu caves, after a few little tiffs over which way we should drive (Lucy cant read a map to save her life ) we finally got to them. only in turn not to go inside them. This was because the guide was on a tour and we read the sign which said you will get wet and muddy and we had only brought one pair of clothes ..haha our next stop was Whangarei. we decided to drive to the whangarie heads to watch the sunset before we found the hostel. It was a nice sun set, shame that behind ... read more

We (me, Danny and Ian) set off on a sunny Sunday along the Twin Coast Discovery Road which takes you all around the Northlands of New Zealand. The roads were very twisty and turny, testing my driving skills but the views were wonderful of all the hills and valleys sweeping across the landscape. Had to stop every now and then to have a good look myself! Everything is such an intense green over here, it's great. We wanted to go to the Waipu Caves and after getting a bit lost and arguing over directions we got to them, only to realise you needed proper caving gear for them...nevermind... We kept driving north aiming towards Whangarei (Fang-ga-ray) where we stayed the night. Before getting to the cosy hostel we drove towards the coast to watch the sunset ... read more

Sorry for our absence of posts in the past few weeks, but we have been either busy or on the road unable to find any internet. So we’ll try to sum everything up here. The past week was spent driving around the northlands, the area north of Auckland, prior to that we spent a few more days in Auckland and got the car all ready for the trip. So we’ll just jump right to the road trip. We first stared by taking a weekend trip to Julie and Monique’s parents beach house in Algies bay, just about an hour north of Auckland on the east coast. The bay was really beautiful and their house was great with mandarin trees right in the backyard. The first night there we went to the bar to watch the All ... read more

Again the weather looked to be in our favour as we headed for the cape. By now we were on the smallest peninsula of New Zealand headed for the very top. It was on this morning that Garreth got a call from his mum in Ireland asking if the Tsunami had hit yet. Until that point we had heard nothing of it. It turns out that an Earth quake north of New Zealand could have possible triggered a Tsunami. Well we weren’t going to let a bit of water get in our way. It had taken us three days to get up here. We continued on our way and went to 90 mile beach. Well if it was going to happen we wanted to get a good view. Despite the lack of a wall of water ... read more

So last major stop in NZ (apart from Auckland) was 90 Mile Beach and Cape Reinga - the tip of the North Island. You can actually drive down the beach (that isn't actually as long as its name suggests!), but we couldn't do this in a campervan because no cars are insured for driving on beaches...keep reading and you'll find out why! We took a day tour in a bus that was cool but not overly exciting. We stopped at the Ancient Kauri Kingdom to look at carvings and furniture made from wood that was about 45,000 years old. They even had a staircase made out of a giant tree trunk! Soon after we stopped at the best shop in the world. Look at that ice cream for a dollar!! That's 40p!! Then we stopped at ... read more

The next destination was 90 mile beach and Cape Reinga. 90 mile beach was pretty sweet, the sand is so compacted you could actually drive your car on the beach. We did take Heather out…she didn’t enjoy it too much but we got her out just fine, unlike some cars that where buried. It was neat to be able to look down the beach and all you could see was shore line, 90 miles of beach…heaven. We then headed even more north to ‘the Cape’. Now ‘the Cape’ is the MOST north point you can get to in NZ, and it is the point where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean collide. The only way to get there is to drive this crazy windy road where the last 15-20km where dirt…oh yeah more dirt roads, ... read more

Sunday 16th April Another pleasant sunny day when we awoke after a much needed kip. Today would see us head back into Auckland (by bus this time Mum !) to see some more of the city and pick up our hire car. We travelled around the outer city centre by bus and decided to head down to the harbourside for lunch. The harbour area is right in the central business district and is therefore dwarfed by the high office buildings but the quaint old Ferry terminal buildings still remain and are a welcome sight amongst the glass and concrete towers. So after a spot of lunch and a shandy we picked up our Toyota Previa and headed back to Bavaria to collect our luggage. After loading up, we took a trip up to the top Mount ... read more

Drove from Paihia (2 hours) to Ahipara where we stayed at Endless Summer Lodge. Named after a definitive surf movie filmed in 1966 called The Endless Summer. A really great hostel - better than most hotels we've stayed in for a fraction of the price. After a day of walking along the endless beaches and relaxing, took a tour to Cape Reinga - where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet. The day included a speedy 4-wheel drive along 90 mile beach and sand surfing down enormous sand dunes!! Great fun!! From Kaihu Farm to Opononi and Mangonui From Dargaville we struggled up the big hill (300m) to Kaihu Farm backpackers. The weather is not as we hoped with cloud and cool. We walked down to a stream after dark to view the glow worms. Impressive except the torch failed on us. My those forests are dark at night just like the stories. While there we managed to play our Johnny Cash record we bought after our viewing of Walk The Line. The German couple of youngsters asked us to play it again and they did and did through the evening. On into the Kauri forest where we met up with the God of the Forest and the Lord of the Forest. Amazing trees of 2,000 years. This forest is all up and down. Happily, although the ... read more
