Hi everyone, back on the road again after a rather rowdy night. Our room in Wellington was above a pub, remember I said about the warning signs at reception ? Well they weren't wrong ! They had a live band in the pub, well I thought they were playing in our room !!! Right next to our bed !! Stu said he didn't get a wink of sleep, I must admit I was woken to the drums being bashed, but had ear plugs in and drifted off again, so I slept through it really, Stu said 'I gave you those earplugs from the plane kit' Oh, so he did !!!! And they worked too !!! So in the morning, early, Stu got up grumpy !! and went off to get the hired car, came back with exactly the same model. Nissan Sunny, old bit of tin (don't forget we're on a budget !) he said they didn't bother checking the scratches and dents again, but it was gears this time, so he was driving it like an automatic !!! Off we went, got some shopping at the supermarket as we were just craving vegetables, had enough of flippin beans and pasta.
Drove through Wellington, raining, very misty, not good at all, Sunday really is the best day to travel as it is quiet on the roads, even though there isn't traffic in New Zealand like home. It was a long drive, took us 5 1/2 hours with a stop, got to our hostel, called The Stable Lodges Backpackers, mmmmm, ok, the rooms are renovated horse stables, mmmmmmm you must be thinking that's nice, but it isn't any of you're Farrow and Ball paintwork !!! Infact in the middle of the courtyard there are big wooden tables where everyone sits and yes we're back to 'Mum and Dad have arrived again', we are the oldest here, currently as I write this, they seem to be having a bit of a party with a GHETTO blaster blaring. I keep looking at Stu when it gets even louder, he tells me I'm getting old, then when he looks up and moans his head off, I just raise my eyebrows !! And say nothing !! Well sort of !! We cooked our dinner in the kitchen tonight, well it is the smallest one yet but with about 10 people in it all cooking, it was
grab a spoon, grab a saucepan and anything else you could get !! We thought we would cook late, thinking that lot would have eaten earlier as they were all having their party outside our room !! But WRONG !! The rules say they have to be quiet by 10.00 pm, we're see !! Oops now there singing and not very well might I add !! To top it all me and Stu have bunk beds !! I said I can't be doing with climbing a ladder, I'll need the loo in the night !! It's me age !!
So going back to when we arrived, dumped our stuff off and went off walking. Napier is certainly a lovely place from what we have seen. It is the Art Deco Capital, they have kept a lot of their buildings and renovated them, it reminds me of Miami, lots of Palm trees around, very tall ones, the sea is lovely, they have black sand, so very volcanic here. The sun was shining and appears to be very clean, not that NZ has litter, it just is the cleanest country I have been to. We walked past a building that said
Brewery outside, went in and a Kiwi was working inside, what a beautiful grand place it was, it turned out he was the owner and it wasn't a brewery, so we had a chat with him for a long time and he gave us places to visit which weren't in our guide book. It's always good to speak to local people as we have been to some really nice places which we would never have found. We walked along the sea and then into the city centre which probably is quarter the size of our high street but not so wide, but the buildings are beautiful. The parks are stunning, flowers everywhere and these tall Palm trees. You know I said the trees are soooooooo big out here, I will put a photo of me 'hugging one', and this is one of the smaller ones !! they really are so big.
You know I find the Kiwi's really honest and polite people, they are always happy to help, nothing is too much trouble, there proud of their country and very respectful of it, it really is very very refreshing, nice to be around it.
Stu has just said
he thinks he is the only person in this accommodation on cholesterol and blood pressure tablets !!! THINKS !! I'll put my money on it !!
The first photo I put up is the public loos, how nice are they ?
