I've known that in some places around the world, you're not suppose to speak with the bus driver. What I didn't know is that in New-Zealand, at least, the bus driver talks to you. Every bus driver I've traveled with intercity had used the bus speakers, and most seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. At the very least he, or she, would introduce himself, list the stops on the way, give the expected timetable and apologize for the delays. Also, they seem to be well aware of any connections the passengers might be making and made sure not to miss them.
