the ferry boat
costs $4 return. And don't lose the ticket A glorious morning as the weather men promised, so I set off across the ferry to explore the headland the other side of the river. Alex stayed in town a bit and mooched round (lots of steps for the pedometer!). Firstly I walked to whitianga rocks, an old pa site, with lovely views of the estuary and some hidden bays. Then for some reason I decided on the steep and difficult route through the bush over the headland, and it was steep, but managable. Again, wonderful views. On the other side were several lovely beaches, so I sat in the shade of a tree and ate my lunch, wishing I'd brought my swimmers. It was so hot, a change of plan was called for. So I didn't walk to the end of the next headland, but took the easy route back to the ferry along the road, came and got my togs - meeting Alex on the way, and we both got into the cool clear refreshing water. After that, we sat and watched the boats and windsurfers (noting that the sailing boat we were on yesterday was well under sail today!) from that big upstairs window - much too hot
back bay
At low tide you can see a stone barrier in the bay, used to dam up the Kauri logs so they could all be sent off together. Shame the tide was high! lovely bay all the same. to sit out, even for me! It felt like a real holiday day today! Off to the next hostel tomorrow, at kati Kati

You are lucky with the weather
It looks beautiful there! We are not so lucky with the weather here - we have had intermittent rainy showers so lucky you decided to go when you did? How many steps Alex? I did 15,456 yesterday!
