Trip to the oyster farms 12 April 2010 006
Watch out for where the dogs have been. Opua dogs cannot read the notice - neither can their owners!!! On Monday (12 April) we were invited to go with Michael, Catherine and family to see their oyster farms. It was a lovely sunny day so we met up at Opua and travelled on their lovely big barge for the tour - around the Bay of Islands. The barge has a powerful outboard motor so we travelled quite fast!! The children were allowed to steer some of the way - great excitement! Michael had to inspect the oysters for quality as they were to be harvested the next day. You can see the experts (and some non-experts!) studying them.
We stopped for lunch on a deserted beach. Cathy had brought some yummy food so we all tucked in. Then we went to try our luck at fishing. Jason caught a big kahawai BUT it escaped just before it was landed! Never mind ; Jason thought it was cruel to take it out of the water - he is SO kind-hearted!
Then Michael took us back to Opua : we had a Lovely day, thankyou Michael and family!

Very interesting
thank you for putting the photos on the blog for us all to see. I have never been to look at the oyster beds before up close and it's great to see. Hope all goes well with the oysters for next season!!
