13th APRIL 2009 - UPRISING NOT SO UPRISING!!!
We arrived at Uprising Resort at around mid-day. We were given our beds in the tree house dorm. So cool...a dorm up in a tree...it's like I am 5 years old again! We then went off to explore. It was a nice enough place but as it was the bank holiday weekend there were loads of families there and kids running around. I love kids but I wasn't so keen on them running around like lunatics and taking over the pool! And yes...I was jealous as I wanted to act like a lunatic too!! It was probably my least favourite resort apart from the fact that the internet was free for 20 minutes. Woo!! I jumped on that bandwagon straight away whilst Nat topped up her tan and then after 20 minutes we swapped. Bad news for Nat...She realised that she had left her journal at Mango bay Resort...not good especially as there was 3 months writing in it! Oh dear! She sorted out for it to be brought to Pacific Harbour tomorrow with the FeeJee experience bus. Fingers crossed!
Once we had both done on the net we went to lie
back in the sun. It didn't last long though as the weather turned and it was a complete mixed bag again! We were enjoying the intense sunshine and then all of a sudden the rain came out of no where! Kind of like finding a foam shrip in a good mix up...just not what you want!! The rain only lasted a minute or two before the sun came out but then the same happened all over again. We may as well have been doing the Hokey Cokey we were in and out so many times! We eventually got fed up and had a walk into town to try and find a cheap place to eat!
We were out of luck in town...as it was Easter Monday a lot of places had shut early and we had to make do with a toasted sandwich and a pot of fruit salad. Still filled me up for the day so no complaints! After browsing the 3 shops open (only around a dozen in the whole town), we headed back to the resort. The weather was still a bit mixed but soon enough it was like having a bag full of foam shrimps as the rain came down heavily and the sun stayed away! We stayed in the room for a while, got showered and changed and then went to the bar for a drink before retiring to the room and falling asleep. I hoped the weather would improve for tomorrow!
14th APRIL 2009 - NOW I KNOW WHAT A TURTLE FEELS LIKE!!!
I slept ok apart from the itching of mosquito bites the blood sucking creatures! I had reacted badly too and my leg had swollen to almost twice its usual size! Not a good look! I applied the savlon liberally, got dressed and then armed with our macs on we headed for breakfast - in with the price so always tastes better! A pot of tea went down well on such a rainy day!
Once eaten we headed back to the room to get our stuff together. Nat was in a rush and so once packed up she headed to reception to start the check out process. I followed 5 minutes later. Flipflops, rain, wooden steps and heavy backpack was not a good combination and I slipped straight off the top step. I didn't hurt myself as the backpack took the force of the fall but I did have a problem! Imagine a turtle turned on its back and not able to flip over again...that was me! I was on my back with my arms and legs in the air. The backpack was too heavy for me to roll over and everytime I got a footing and tried to stand up my flipflops wouldn't grip and I slipped back down again! I felt so stupid and looked exactly how I felt!! After a couple of minutes of lying in the rain a guy came by, saw my struggle and helped me up. The guy couldn't help but laugh at me and I laughed at myself....what a complete doofus!!
Nat was still at reception when I got there. Everyone on Fiji time as usual. Poor customer service too...answering calls mid conversation and leaving the desk half way through a transaction! In England you would get sacked for less but here it was normal. We each owed $28 and each gave a $50. It took the lady around 10 minutes to work out the change and so I told Nat to head into town and said I would follow on once sorted.
The walk into town was not nice. Raining so I had my mac on but very hot too and with a heavy backpack I got a little clammy to say the least. The roads were dirty too and my flipflops managed to splash dirt right the way up the backs of my legs. Sometimes I am not sure why I bother to get a shower! I finally arrived in town just after Nat at 8.30am. We were to wait there for the FeeJee bus which was bringing Nat's diary and then hopefully catch the 9.30am bus to Suva. There was no sign of the FeeJee bus and a kind lady told us we could wait in her shop out of the rain. We were there for ages...FeeJee bus must have been on Fiji time and arrived 1 hour late at 9.30am. As a consquence we missed the sunbeam bus but worst of all they didn't even have Nat's diary. It was a bit of a nightmare but we eventually managed to contact Mango Bay who said they still had it. I waited in town at an internet cafe whilst Nat caught the public bus back to Mango Bay, picked up her diary and then hopped on the bus back to Pacific Harbour. A big waste of our time and the whole morning gone!
We eventually got on a 12.30pm bus to Suva. It was rammed!! We had to sit seperate and were literally squashed in like sardines. The journey was not pleasant and when we arrived in Suva at around 1.30ish the rain was still pouring down! Come on Fiji weather!
