What makes this so cool is that it is legit. There were only about 4 tourists at this funeral and hundreds of Fijians. And of course everyone was super friendly to us as usual. Toby got lots of positive response for wearing a sulu. And we were served a huge plate of venison, pork and chicken afterward. No wonder these people are a bit large! ... read more

We have been to countries where the people are friendly but Fiji really takes the cake. The native Fijians always say Bula to us with a big smile. They often shake our hands and ask us where we're from, where we're going, and if we like Fiji. We spoke to one man who recently got back from Iraq where he served as a soldier for the UN. Another woman spent her lunch break sitting with us to make sure that we caught the right bus. We spent our first two nights at a tiny speck of an island called Nananu-i-ra. Bibi's Hideaway was just what we needed- a huge garden full of coconut palms, papaya trees, passion fruit vines, pineapple plants, banana , kumquat and orange trees...and all the fruit we could eat. Huge fruit bats, almost the size of buzzards, swooping around the trees in the evening, and plenty of different sized geckoes for company in the bure. The bags arrived in a pickup 24 hrs after we did, which ... read more

…Once we actually did leave, we REALLY regretted our decision. In order to enjoy another full day of beach activities on Caqalai, we left at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, which was low tide. We hadn’t realized exactly what that meant… It meant that, in order to get to Ovalau (a larger island off of Viti Levu), we would have to go outside the reef and its calm water. For the locals who took us in their boat, this was no big deal. For us, however, it was a huge deal. Completely insane - it was the scariest thing we’d ever done (except for being trapped in an overturned car in a ditch along the PA turnpike - that was pretty terrifying). Imagine yourself in a tiny (23 foot), fiberglass, open boat with no life jackets, ... read more
