Edit Blog Post
G'day everyone,
Thought we better update our blog before its 2013!! We are currently living in an apartment near Shenton Park, which we are renting until the middle of January. We are both enjoying the luxury of having our own space and not having to share a toilet, shower, kitchen and bedroom with others.
We have had a busy couple of weeks:
Paul started work for a company helping to build tractors and trailers for farms. He has been there for a couple of weeks now. His first day didn't start great, despite Paul being enthusiastic to start, setting of an hour early and spending time planing the route he managed to get completely lost. He did not realise he was lost until the bus driver stopped the bus driver said to him "you gunna get off mate? the bus terminates here." Paul said he stepped off the bus into an housing estate, after walking around for 10minutes he eventually found someone to ask 1. Where was he? And 2. Directions to his work. The lady laughed and said "I think your a bit lost, you need to walk 2miles up this road then catch a bus to your work".
Paul then later realised he had got the bus from the wrong bus station. Luckily his work saw the funny side after he eventually arrived to work at 9:30am (2hours late). Paul has now mastered the quickest route to work and gets a lift home with a german friend from his work.
I have not had any luck on the job front yet, I was offered a job with bodyshop to later find out they were not able to take anyone on due to poor sales!? This was really annoying as I had stopped looking for work after they had phoned to say I had the job. All the xmas and temporary jobs seemed to have disappeared within that week. I have been handing out my cv to local shops and cafes but doubtful as nowhere seems to be advertising anymore. However, there are plenty of temporary jobs in construction, I was tempted to start applying for these but Paul didn't think this would be a good idea!
We been to a music festival at Claremount showgrounds called Sterosonic. This was a great day, which we both really enjoyed. The thought of mud, Wellies and puddles
has always put me off the idea of going to a music festival in the UK but I experienced none of these here in oz! The weather was fantastic and the atmosphere all day was fab, we went to our first silent disco which Goodwin. Everyone was provided headphones and you got the choice of 3 DJs, who were at the front. It was really funny to watch before we had a go, as everyone was dancing away but we couldn't hear anything.
We have also been to watch Australia v South Africa cricket match at the WACA which was much better than I had anticipated! Before this game i knew very little about the rules of cricket but after felt like a bit of a pro. Paul was very patient and taught me all the rules. This was Ricky Pontings last match and there was a great atmosphere all day, despite australia loosing! This was a very hot day and as much as Paul grudged it we tasted the most expensive water we have ever had ($5dollars for a small bottle!!!).
We have spent a lot of time at the beach, our closest beach is now
Cottesloe which is a 10minute journey on the train. This beach also has massive waves, which again Paul has enjoyed whilst i read my book. Paul did manage to persuade me to go in on a day he described as "really calm", we were swimming when suddenly Paul started shouting warning me that a massive wave was coming, I quickly tried to swim towards the sand, next thing I knew the wave came over my head and took me under... safe to say I wouldn't make a good surfer!
We have spent some time exploring Fremantle ('Freo' as the locals call it), which is also really close to us. Here there is western Australia's largest working port. This is where we will get the ferry to go to Rottnest Island, which we are hoping to visit soon.
We went to Kings Park at night the other week (we took the easy route this time). The views were unbelievable of the city at night, unfortunately my camera isn't very good in the dark so the pictures we got don't reflect the stunning views we saw.
With regards to Australian wildlife I am happy to report we still have not seen any snakes, sharks or crocodiles! Although we have encountered our first HUGE spider but he was on the other side of the window and was gone the next morning so didn't cause too much distress. Paul has seen his first kangaroo whilst he was working in the outback for a couple of days (im jealous he saw one but not of being in the outback). We are planning a trip to Perth zoo over Christmas so I'm hoping to see a kangaroo then though!
We shall update you all again soon,
Sheila & Bruce
(aka 'The Poms'😉
