Freo and Rottnest Island

Nice. . . you can see Perth in the distance
Having fully completed our road trip in Albany we headed back to the Perth area to reluctantly hand back our motor, then went for a few nights in Fremantle, so called Freo by the locals.

Fremantle is only a few miles from Perth but it has completely different atmosphere and character. Staying in a less than perfect, dirty, overcrowded but lively backpackers called Pirates we had three nights in freo just to do nowt after our tours.

It is one of the few towns in Oz that has a bit of extra character to it, a problem with such a new country. Freo consists of loads of brew pubs, cafes, markets and shops and is set right on the mouth of the Swan river on the fishing harbour, good fish and chips.

Having got bored of photos we never got around to taking any of Freo , so you will just have to use your imagination.

From Freo we set sail to Rottnest Island for two nights in Perth's Playground. Rottnest, the name means Rats Nest as the Dutch guy who fist visited there mistook the native Quokka (mini marsupuals) for giant rats. It is a sandy

island a short boat ride from Perth / Freo. It's a brilliant place to visit with secluded bays and unspoilt beaches, there are no cars alowed on the island so bikes or the bus are the only form of transport. Its like you have been transported to a South Pacific Island in only half an hour of Perth.

There are coral reefs (the most southernly in the world) most of the way around the island which makes for some ace snorkeling and the visibility is amazing.

Bunking down in the former army barracks on the island, now the YHA, was ok too. We would definately recommend a quick trip to Rottnest for anybody who visits Western Australia.

Our final few nights in Australia are now being spent in Perth, back at the Billabong, keeping our heads down until the wallet easing shores of South East Asia.

We did venture out for Australia day on the 26th January. The aussies put on a good show, with stalls, fireworks, music and a funfair. However, the temperatures in excess of 40 degrees did spoil the carnaval atmosphere with people cramming under what little shade was available, it was scorching,

even by Perth standards.

Looking forward to Vietnam, Australia is a nice place to visit but the cities and the culture are in many ways just like back home. Time for a change, Ho Chi Minging City should do it!!
