We rode the Great Ocean Road along the southernmost part of mainland Australia today and yesterday. Reminded me a bit of Highway 3 down the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Beautiful, but wow was it difficult riding. I don’t think it ever got above 10 degrees (50 F) either day. Because of the southerly gale force continuous cross winds and intermittent intense showers we also rarely made it above 60 kph (40mph). Still, we made it to Warrnambool early enough to spend several hours in their well put together Shipwreck Museum and replica coastal town. Some sad stories about the many, many major ship wrecks in the area over the last two centuries because of the weather we’ve just experienced.
