Miz Behavin, a 10m catameran has been our home for the past 10 days as we sailed around the islands that comprise the Whitsundays. Originally called the Cumberland Islands, these were once volcanic mountains slowly drowned by a rising sea. They became known as the Whitsundays because Lt. James Cook sailed into the Passage on Whit Sunday June 3rd, 1770 where he discovered the Great Barrier Reef by running aground on submerged coral.

The rocky islands rise from a postcard-coloured sea, often with long stretches of deserted fine-grained white silica beaches while the gaudy parrots and sulphur-crested cockatoos argue in the tree tops. We flew into Proserpine and chartered a catamaran from Shute Harbour close to Airlie Beach. On bad days the sea was murky or the strands of jelly fish ovum were so thick it was like swimming through jello. Either these couldn't sting us yet or our stinger suits were highly effective if unflattering, at least for the more mature members of our group. Keith looks like Ralph Klein wearing his olympic luge suit. On good days the corals were amazing, populated by an infinite variety of impossibly coloured fish, with sea turtles frequently popping their heads out of the sea at the sound of our boat approaching.

Our daughter's two friends left this afternoon and tomorrow we exchange our catamaran for a car and plan to drive to Cairns. No doubt it will be even hotter there than the 37 degrees C reached in Airlie Beach this afternoon. Our daughter is charting her course now that she has passed her final exams with flying colours and is officially an Occupational Therapist
