Christmas Day in Byron Bay
Makes a change to have Christmas in the warmth with the sun shining! After leaving Rainbow Beach we headed south to Noosa, and it was only a 2hr drive which was a welcome break from the all day journeys! Noosa is a cool little place. Very expensive but the beach made up for it! We stayed at Dolphin's backpackers and it was one of the best hostels I have stayed in so far. All the staff were helpful and chilled out and the location right next to the beach was perfect. I have finally given in and bought some body boarding flippers which means I don't need to worry about hiring kit anymore. We spent both days on the beach...made a couple of trips into the town but it was good to just relax a bit after what has been a hectic few weeks! On the second day in Noosa we went for a swim in the ocean at 8 in the morning...awesome. The sunset over Sunshine beach at Noosa was beautiful as well. The surf was still pounding in and the sky was all tinted red. The surf is getting really good now...I managed to get a full afternoon of waves in the other day. One of the best memories of Noosa has to be the meal Dan and I made on the second night there. Jacket potato and beans doesn't sound that interesting...but when you have 3 potatoes, a whole can of beans and half a block of cheese...it makes for one amazing meal. We then headed further south down to Brisbane. Again, it was only a 2hr drive which was good and we met up with lots of people wee had met on the Oz Bus back in Cairns so it was like a mini reunion! We checked into base backpackers in the center of the city. It was weird to be back in a city after spending so much time in small towns at the beach. This Base hostel was a lot better than the one on Magnetic Island (just in case anyone is deciding where to stay on the East Coast). Only being in Brisbane for one night we didn't have any major plans to get to adventurous so I got hold of Jamie and he was in Brisbane too so a few hours later he came down to meet us. We stumbled across a bar that had a quiz on so being the intelligent bunch that we are we made a team (suitably named by Jamie as team "I Like Quiz"). Four rounds later we had won! 50 bucks came our way and that paid for a massive lunch the next day. I am now down in Byron Bay for Christmas. It has been very good to just chill out over the last few days and relax a bit. I am posting this at 10pm on Christmas Day. It was weird waking up on Christmas morning in the baking heat and sun but that set the mood for the day...which we spent all down on the beach in the surf! Although...no matter how many times I try I really am not built for stand up surfing. I believe you need a low center of gravity for it and I am simply too tall...much more suited to body boarding! This evening there was a group of 6 of us who cooked up a massive Xmas dinner (BBQ) and we have enough left over for lunch tomorrow, and the next day...and the next day! I did however manage to get hold of some mince pies...has to be done! I also did my very own Christmas swim this morning...just like at home...but in 35+ degrees of heat and a warm ocean! Byron bay has been great fun and a perfect place to spend Christmas. A very chilled out/hippy type place. Brilliant beach and a cool little town. Totally geared up for backpackers but nevertheless it still has a real local feel to it which is good. I thought this would be a good time (Christmas and all) to quickly thank everyone who has helped us out on the trip so far. Especially Dave, Cindy, Peter and Jill in South Africa, John, Sheren, Erin, Chris and Nick in Perth and of course my parents back at home! Merry Christmas to all and enjoy the swim on Christmas morning back home! Next update will be when I get down to Sydney at the weekend. Early start tomorrow as we are leaving for Spot X surf camp for one night on the way down South. P.s I hope my spelling has improved lately...it is not because I can't spell...it is because I type so fast due to lack of internet credit/time remaining...(well, that's my excuse anyway!)
