20/1/09 = Back to Civilisation
Woke up at 4:12am to the sight and sound of a turkey half pecking/half dragging a rubbish bag across the front of the tent...they'll do more for food than even I will! Could see him through the mesh of the front door and the rustling sound was so annoying, but was just too early to move, so put my head under scrap of sleeping bar and fingers in ears. Drifted off soon enough. Woke up at a more sociable hour of 6:30 (only just more sociable and definitely wouldn't be sociable at home) and tried to get back to sleep, but Deb and Hat already up = me up too. Did the daylight walk to toilet/longdrop (just to prove I wasn't scared) and sat with Hat on jetty for a while. Deb already up having breakfast and by time got back to tent, heard a loud banging from outside. Hat poked head out, but nothing there. 20mins later, when all in tent, banging came again, this time much louder, closer and accompanied by lots of shouting. Poked heads out this time to find a family of Australians marching through our camp site, banging pots and
Great Reflections
Can hardly tell which one is real trees and which one is just reflection. pans and shouting that they were our "morning wake up call...time to get up". Deb asked what on earth they were doing and mother of family screeched that we had kept her up all night, so now we could get up! Deb assured lady that we were actually tucked up in bed at 9pm, so if she wanted to complain about noise late at night, she was in wrong place. They then marched over to and surrounded the Canadians' tents. They banged, shouted, screamed and eventually some of guys crawled out of tent. From where we were, could here the argument ensue. Involved v.loud voices, lots of swearing from Australians (even though had brought their 2 young kids along on march too....how pathetic!) and some....not v.nice remarks. Started to get a little too heated, so got out of tent to join guys; not sure what I thought 5ft2 me could do...ha! Here are some of the best/funniest snippets of argument can remember:
Oz: We came out here to enjoy the wilderness and we dont need you ar*eholes keeping us up all night
Canadians: If you're so tired...then go to bed now and shit the he*l up
Oz: You're
not welcome in our country...f*ck off home
Canadians: You need us in your country. We give you money...you need our money!
Oz: Shove your f*cking money up your a*se
Canadians: What an excellent example you are for your children...well done...you must be so proud... (Canadians clapping here)
Oz: P*ss off. Our kids know right and wrong, now f*ck off home.
Sounds funny now, but was scary at time and glad when Oz family finally left. They wrote down name of company we booked with and said were going to complain; didn't really evoke any reaction. Actually all worked out quite well, because had to set off back in 40mins, so guys needed to be woken up by someone. Got on with packing up then. Took tent down, had breakfast (v. non-enjoyable spaghetti on bread), got washed, then got canoe back on water. Immediatley regretted decision of using lovely soap on wash, because had to get straight back into gross iodine water to get back in canoe! Cahanged positions today and I was at back of canoe steering. Turned out to be a much better job than others and actually enjoyed all 1hr30 of canoeing today. Think was because had
Sand Dune
Can just about make out where the sand dunes are on this picture. more to concentrate on with steering and paddling (although could also be due to fact that sooooo excited at thought of chocolate bar = in my bely v.shortly). Water was really still all way back and saw some more amazing reflections - v.pretty.
We arrived back first, then English guys, then Canadians. Boat wasn't even there to pick us up anyway. Turns out that Canadians had spent some time handwriting a note to Oz family. Can't remember it all, but know the starting line was "To the Australian Dickheads". Boat soon came, loaded things on and jumped in. Boat man asked what trouble there had been (Oz guy had obviously rang company) and Canadian guy gave him brief run down. I was too busy dreaming about food to listen or even care. When docked in, rangers were waiting at edge of water. Unloaded boat, then Canadians had to go over to talk to them. Gave their side of story and should all be o.k., crazy Oz family were most in wrong because never even asked guys to be quiet. Anyway, didn't concern me and after done all unloading, I skipped past rangers and off to my jolly little shop
to toddle off and buy all the chocolate the world could provide me with. Spent 10mins oggling over chocolate bar before decided on a mars bar and a return trip in 5mins to buy a cornetto if still fancied one. Didn't get time for cornetto in end as all straight back in van and off to base camp to sort out all equipment. Pleased to see that trip man had bought us all some chips. Chocolate and chips....welcome back to civilisation 😊
Got to base camp and had to unpack wash and generally tidy equipment. Then said our goodbyes and headed back to hostel. So pleased to get back to hostel and v.excited for shower (not as excited as was for chocolate though...is that wrong?)Got in shower, but was v.disappointing. Was the equivalent of cooking chocolate in the chocolate world...i.e. totally inadequate and unworthy. Shot out few (3 to be precise) spurts of water, 1 of which was really thick and incredibly painful. If turned pressure down slightly, was left with 1 trickle. So, spent whole shower time either wincing under 1 painful shoot or starfished against wall! Not what had in mind, although since shower took top layer
The end of the great Canoe Safari
It's been good, but get me back to dry land....and chocolate! of skin off, no way any dirt could have survived = bonus!
Quickly wasked though smelly camping clothes, then went off to explore Noosa. We staying in Noosaville so had to catch free shuttle into Noosa Heads. Realy impressed when arrived. Looked like a really nice place; alot like Byron Bay. Made mistake of heading to Tribal Travel first though and ended up spending ages on internet instead of looking round town. Was a waste of time too, because camera didn't work and blog kept deleting itself! When finally did get out, headed for beach. Beautiful sunny day, town beautiful and beach even nicer. Even though was 4:30, beach still full and lots of shade. Did walk around it which had already planned. There is a really cool boardwalk built round beach that leads through National Park and is really good to walk round; great views. Didn't have long because had to catch last shuttle at 6, so couldn't do as much of walk as would have liked to. Managed to get to little Cove and through a bit of National Park to Boiling Pot, but then had to turn back to catch shuttle.
Lots of people waiting
to get on shuttle, but managed to get on first round. Hat desperate to get pizza and pint deal, so had to be back before 6:30. Got back, went on internet for a while, then me and Deb headed to supermarket for dinner. Pitch black on walk and didn't really know where we were going, but glowing sign of Wollworths led the way just like the star did for the wisemen. Rushing becuase was 7:50 and thought might close at 8, but stayed open later than thought, so could saunter round. Got few bits, then headed back eating our fruit. Took alot of navigating to get back (no Woolworths sign to help us now), but managed. Had a museli dinner (not to be underestimated), did yet more on internet (blog = hardwork) then put a phonecall in to Mum. Love you Mummy x Chatted for while and she confirmed for us all that certain sharks can live in rivers...glad I didn't ring before the canoe trip! Went off to beed then. Hat already asleep, Deb chilling out. Stayed up for a while, but then went off to sleep happily 😊
