The Pacific Ocean and Traveling have a lot in common.
A constant flow of wave after wave.
After leaving Cairns this morning I am now riding a fresh wave down the coast of Queensland. I am now officially a backpacker again, and have 3 months of solid traveling ahead of me with a lot of cool stuff to see and do, before I arrive back on Scottish soil. Unfortunately doing this much traveling forces you to leave great people and places behind. The past two months in Cairns have been phenomenal; it's a very rare thing to enjoy going to work and working with so many cool people - (ts also rare to get smashed most nights you work). A couple of English girls, Sallyann and Sam have been especially good friends, and our nights out together are always legendary, so I'm gonna miss them heaps. But I had a great last night out with everyone, with some extreme shenanigans thrown in just for fun. Whats that? You'd like an example of the madness, well ok. At Gilligan's, where I worked, there has always been a wet t shirt contest, however the new management just started a wet jocks contest
I miss my girls.
Start of a great night out. for guys to enter. As fate would have it, the first night of the wet jocks was on my leaving night, I had no choice. I'll set the scene, a packed nightclub at 1am, a stage, screaming girls, me in my little topman pants dancing my ass off. I was the clear cut winner.
Lets backtrack and take a look at my last month in cairns. One fun day out was a visit to Hartleys crocodile adventures. I learned some very interesting facts about crocs, that I would love to share to people on a face to face basis. Now is not the time for the difference between saltwater and freshwater crocs. All you need to know is that Elmo, Sally and I had a great day out. One other day trip with the same crew was to 'boulders'. Its cool to remember that Cairns is in the tropics and is actually surrounded by rainforest, so 'boulders' has a nice walking track through some jungle, and theirs huge rocks and pounding water (no swimming). The amount of wildlife we saw was brilliant, so many spiders, really angry ants (see picture), a snake and turtles! I spotted the turtles but

Old school friend Greg and Me. got over excited by shouting and pointing, and scared them off before we got photos. Still everyone agreed it was a good spot. Another memorable day was finally getting out to do some scuba diving on the great barrier reef, which is classified as the largest living organism on earth. It was a fancy ass boat, and very different from diving in Thailand, but visibility was great and it was a great to get out on the water. Saw some awesome types of coral and fish, with a few tight swim throughs as well.
My friends from South Africa, that I know for a few years back also swung by cairns in their travels, so after a big night of catching up I jumped in Greg and Caroline's 'Jucy' campervan for a mini roadtrip. First up we visited Mossman Gorge, one of the few places safe to swim without danger of crocs. This was a really fun place, surrounded by nature. Our main destination however was Cape Tribulation in the Daintree Rainforest, A scenic beach jutting out from the jungle, where we camped, no electricity out here, so it was very humbling to lie on the beach at night
with only the sounds of the jungle and a bright sky full of stars. The next mornings activity was 'jungle surfing', or more precisely you get harnessed up and travel from platform to platform via zipline, the fact that your doing it from tree to tree high up in the rainforest makes it a worthwhile experience. I recognised two staff members from my club, and they were highly embarrassed when I reminded them how drunk they were a couple of nights ago. Traveling back down to cairns we stopped off at Port Douglas to chill out on the beach, a fitting end to a brilliant mini roadtrip. Greg and Caroline are great people to catch up with, because I might not see them for a year, but when we do its always like old times. So I now all I have to do is plan a trip for South Africa.
My next entry will be very soon, my adventures down the Queensland coast have already began to unfold, so don't go anywhere, I'll be right back.
