Ann & Rob are great
Really hospitable hosts
Hard to say goodbye.
Pick-up at the YHA by the Oz bus was set for 7:20. Lucky for me Ann and Rob drive right by the YHA in the morning and were able to take me there without a problem. The problem was I slept in! Dang dark room! Luckily I was prepared (must be the Girl Guide in me) and everything was just about ready and packed to go and I was ready in less than 10 minutes time and even had time to spare - 2 minutes! The morning drive into town was nice driving along the river. Rob said they usually leave about 10 minutes later and traffic is much heavier. Amazing what 10 minutes difference can make.
Before I knew it, we were in front of the YHA and it was time to say farewell to my two hosts of the last couple of days. It was really nice to have spent some time with two genuinely nice and interesting people. It was also nice to be able to stay in one place for a few days, feel at home and not have to put down a
key deposit. lol So after a few hugs and pleasantries were exchanged, Ann and Rob hopped back into their truck to head to work while I stood on the sidewalk waving goodbye and having to wait for the bus to pull up. When the bus eventually came it was actually two buses. I hate it when two buses take off at the same time cuz that means 40+ people. Oh well, I shouldn't complain, right? It was nice to see when I boarded the bus that there were a few faces that I recognized like Nicola, Liz and Kelly. Sitting at the very back of the bus I also made a few new chat buddies.
Our first stop of the morning was in Noosa to pick up and drop off people. So we're sitting there for about 15 minutes and all the passengers are ready to go when our driver Nigel comes on board to announce we're going to take a short break here so everyone can check out the nice beach and grab a snack if they wanted. Well, why didn't you tell this to us 15 minutes earlier instead of making us sit in the bus! Anyhoo, we were soon off again until we got to Rainbow Beach for our designated lunch stop.
I wasn't all that impressed with Rainbow Beach since in my head I had built it up with this image of all these different coloured sands like reds and oranges. Where we sat on the beach to eat, it looked pretty brown to me and if you dug your heel in the sand a bit you could see some black. It was really hot sitting in the sun eating our lunch and I welcomed the gentle breeze every time it passed by us. There was one girl that was sunbathing topless and I think she really liked getting attention because she kept standing up!
After lunch we went for a little walk down the beach from where we had lunch and saw some of the cliffs with the red and orange colouring. It still wasn't THAT impressive! Some people took a dip into the water but it seemed like too much effort for me since we were only going to stay another 10 minutes.
Then it was back into town to watch a didgeridoo performance. That was a pretty cool and amazing little show they put on for us. Apparently circular breathing is used to play a didgeridoo. It's really interesting how you can't tell when they take a breath. I must admit after about 10 minutes of listening to them perform I got a bit bored of listening to them. They must have played for 20 minutes if not longer. If we wanted we could have stuck around Rainbow Beach a few days longer to prep and paint our own didgeridoo. There were some nicely painted ones drying in the sun and then some that were a little too busy. Once they put a coat of shellac on them and were all shiny, they all looked pretty good. There was one guy that was painting a really detailed bluish coloured snake winding around his didgeridoo. Now that was cool. If I were to paint one I'd have a tough time trying to decide what to paint and then which colours to use as well. Too much choice! I did see lots of stencils that you could use so perhaps that's the way I'd go. If I had the time I would have painted my own boomerang since that is much easier to transport and post home!
By mid-afternoon it was time to set off again. This time to our final destination of Hervey Bay...Gateway to Fraser Island!
