Banana
Named after a bullock, not a fruit11 April - Banana. The site was behind the pub. In fact, the town consists of 2 gas stations, 1 pub and a post office. We waited until the post office opened, bought 2 postcards to send to the grandchildren, wrote and posted to them. Then on to Carnarvon Gorge National Park. Our Tomtom refused to find it, but we had a map. By now we have towed the caravan for over 1,100 km and the car has done about 2,100km. Easy to mount up when you are having fun.
Carnarvon is a national park created around a sanstone range of mountains which has has a deep gorge carved through it. As the sandstone retains water, it creates a river that runs for year round. Valuable in Australia. However, they've had lots of rain over the past few months.
There's a set of rocks to assist crossing the river just opposite the park headquarters that have been replaced three times in the last few months. The park is famous for the ancient cycads and aboriginal drawings. The main access is one track up alongside the creek with points of interest off to the side - about 22 km return. There are
Carnarvon - Moss Pool
One of the side trips up the gorge. several river crossings. The river is clear, which is not common in Australia - mostly brown. We covered the Moss Garden, Cathedral, and Art Gallery. Really good and well maintained.
Also there is an area called the Rock Pool, which is two gorgeous pools really great for swimming. We went several times.
On 15th we went to Emerald which is a farming and mining town. They were badly affected by the rain in January. In fact the rain is still going on and everyone is sick of it. We played golf at Emerald Golf Club which had 18 holes open for the first time since December. The Coles Supermarket had 1 1/2 metres through it and has only just started refurbishment.
The park we are in has very funny drive thtrough sites where the neighbour's vehicle right next to your front door.
We bought a length of pvc tube which we have slung under the caravan and makes a great storage system for the van's drainage pipe. Chris & Lynne have passed the van across to us in superb condition, we couldn't ask for more, but we can tweak it
