Crocs in Port Douglas
The hidden sign about crocs! Hi eveyone, sorry it has taken so long we have had a few technical issues but here we are anyway! So we arrived in Cairns on the 3rd June 07 just over 2 weeks ago and it has been all go since. The first couple of days we just looked around Cairns taking it all in, we booked a trip on the great barrier reef where Bri went scuba diving and I went snorkling. The weather was not great it rained a bit but the sun came out for a few hours so I could start on my tan!
After a few days we started on the hunt for our camper van, we trailed the hostels looking for adverts and picked a few we wanted to take a look at. The first one was owned by a french guy, it was bright yellow and a little tatty but quite nice, we almost bought it untill we spotted another one. We phoned the current owners for a viewing and off we went. Well we both fell in love with it straight away, we knew it was the one. As we where leaving though another couple came to view it so
4 Mile Beach
Port Douglas it was all a bit tense! (it was almost as bad as buying a house!) We phoned after half an hour and told them we wanted it, they phoned us back and they had another offer...gutted...BUT it was not a good offer so we put ours in and they accepted yeahhhhhhh!!!!! We had to wait for a few days though for some documents so we went off and did some sight seeing.
The first place we went was on the sky rail in Cairns, this is just one big gondola (similar to a ski lift) that goes right up into the mountians to a place called Kuranda, a really qaint little place. Here we walked through the village and the markets and went to see some very dangerous creatures of Austraila, snakes, spiders (the most deadly in oz), frogs you name it we saw them. Also on a nicer note we saw some very cute Koalas, wallibies and some big old crocs! This was a fun day out and we got the train back which was amazing.
Then we headed off up North a little to a place called Port Douglas, this was a cool little town with
a four mile beach. Initially though we went to the wrong beach, we got there and it was quite grassy, it very hot so Bri and got our swimmers on, slapped on the sun cream and worshipped the sun. I thought it was odd that no one else was doing the same, I looked around, no one in the water, very strange. It wasn't till I noticed the small sign to my right saying 'NO SWIMMING CROCODILES INHABIT THIS AREA!' So you can imagine we where off pretty sharpish. That night we barbecued down on four mile beach which was just lush and then we headed in to the town. We ended up playing pool doubles with an ozzy girl and kiwi girl who wiped the floor with us but it was after a few beers!! So sfter a couple of days here we headed back to Cairns to pick up the van.
So we got the van on the Tuesday, we headed to a campsite just on the out skirts of Cairns so we could sought it out. We bought a Toyota Hi Ace and it was 24 years old! The previous 2 owners had named her Elliott
New Home
Bri making himself at home so we decided thats what is was going to be. We unpacked our ruck sacks at last and settled our selves in it was great. We did a bbq that night and sat outside the van drinking wine, it was bliss. We stayed here a couple of nights then headed on our first adventure.
Our first trip was to take us up North again to a place callled Cape Trib, this is right up the top of the east coast and is where the Rain Forest meets the Ocean. On the way we stopped at a place called Mossman Gorge, which was very pretty and wet as it was raining. Then we headed to a place called Daintree, which consisted of a whole five shops!!! Then to get to Cape Trib you have to get a ferry thing across the Daintree river which takes like 3 minutes, so we did that. We then drove through dence rain forest on very windy roads to our campsite. We set the van up with her oarning and then as soon as we had done it the heavens opened....I have never seen rain like it! We stayed here 2 nights but saw nothing
Meet Elliott
Bri made sure she new her colours! because the rain was so bad, I think we will have to go back some day.
So we left Cape Trib behind and we headed to a place called Mareeba where we where told it would be dry. They where right the sun was out and we managed to get all our things dry again. Here we went to see a coffee plantation where some of the worlds best coffee is produced. (check out Skybury coffee in JS). We then went off to Granite Gorge where Bri fed rock wallabies and I got bit by a parrot! We then headed to a place called Atherton in the table lands where yep it rained again so played some cards went to bed and left the next day!
We are now currently in a place called Innisfail which is the start of the east coast, but it is still raining (not havin much luck with the weather can you tell!!!) We are here till tomorrow and then we are heading to Mission Beach for a few days. The van is great though a little small but it is ours and we are loving it. We are hoping the weather will
improve soon as below Townsville and then the rest of Austraila there is the worst drought they have had in 100 years!
So you should here from us again soon when we have some more pics, we have had some problems with our camera so some of the things I have mentioned on here we don't have photos of but hope you enjoy them.
Love and miss you all,
L and B xxxx
