Finally got to Australia, and it is amazing. The weather is scoarching hot, the people are really nice, they don't hassle us every two seconds to buy stuff. We stayed at a hostel called the Cavanagh which was really good, they had a nice pool to chill out in, a bar which always had people in it and nice food for a reasonable price. We all stayed in one room, we had bunk beds to sleep in which had the most uncomfortable matresses on them. We had a nice en suite with a nice shower which was better than having to wait around for other people sharing just one bathroom. Had a look around the shops and looked at some places to have meals and some drinks. We went on a bike ride one day to a place called east point reserve which was right by the sea. Wanted to go for a swim in the sea but you aren't allowed because the water was full of box jellyfish who can give you a pretty nasty sting. We found a small lake nearby and had a little walk through the water to cool off before riding back to the hostel.
The night life is pretty good in Darwin, we only had to walk for about five mins before we were on Mitchell street which was full of bars and restaurants. We booked two trips while we in Darwin, the first was a day trip to Litchfield national park and the second was a two day trip to Kakadu national park. Had to be up pretty early to catch the tour bus to Litchfield but it took a good couple of hours to get there so we could chill out and relax. Our guide's name was joey, he took us all round the park showing us termite mounds and all the damage the floods had caused from the cyclone days before we arrived in Darwin. The scenery was beautiful, despite all the flood damage, you could see nothing but trees and rocks for miles and miles. We met up with another tour group for lunch nearby to a waterfall which had flooded and wrecked loads of the trees and plant life near it. That was where we got to see our first croc, he was only little and was just chilling out on a fallen tree. After lunch we
headed off to a rock pool that we were allowed to swim in. The rock pool was amazing, there was a huge waterfall that was aboue 30m high. We left our stuff on some rocks and dove in, the water was soo refreshing it cooled you off instantly. The current caused by the waterfall was quite strong but i managed to swim under the water and came out behind the fall. The water was nice and deep as well and was full of these little fish that would peck at your legs or feet if you scabs on them and clean them. Spent ages in the water, it even started to chuck it down with rain and it diddn't occur to us that even though we weren't getting wet our bags were. We quickly got out to find our clothes and towels soaking wet, so we bunged them under some trees for cover and got back in the water. After the rock pool we headed through the woods to another rock pool but we got to a bridge we needed to cross and found it under water. We put our bags down under cover and followed our tour guide up
stream. The current was pretty strong and our guide kept freaking us out by telling us to watch out for sakes and spiders. After a little while we stopped and the let the current take us back to our bags. When we got back to the bridge, the whole area where our bags were was flooded. We couldn't believe how quickly the water had flooded and luckily one guy had stayed behind and moved all our bags from the incoming water. After the swimming we got back to the bus and headed back to Darwin. When we got off the bus, the tour guide gave us some free food vouchers for a pub called the vic and some of the people we met on the trip said they were going there that night so we told them we would meet them there. Had a shower and got changed ready to go out to the vic. It was pretty good in the vic, they had tables reserved for the people that had on been on trips that day so we sat down with the guys we met on the trip and got some food. After the food, a guy that worked in the vic started getting people up to throw a little ball into a bucket and if you could do it you got free beer! We all went up to give it a go and some us got free beer and some us didn't. A bit later the guy called up people to play another game so sarah and i volunteered to play. The game was you had to pick up a cardboard box with only your teeth and only your feet and forehead could touch the ground. As the game went on the guy would rip some of the box off so it was getting lower and lower to the ground. One by one people were going out as the box got lower until it was flat on the ground with a tiny flap sticking up to grab. It was just me and this other guy, you had two attemtps to do it and the other failed both times and i managed it first time and won. I thought i was going to get some beer as my prize but it turned out i had won a trip to Alice springs worth about 200 pounds! Unfortunately because we were going to Kakadu for two days, it meant i had no time to go on the trip i just won. We managed to blag some wristbands that meant we got free beer from nine til ten that night which was awesome and then we just danced the night away.
We chilled out on the friday, just chilled out by the pool at the hostel and went out for a nice meal that night. Ha d a pretty good St patricks day, went to an irish pub called shennanigans and met up with this irish guy that was on our trip to Litchfield. We wanted to watch the england v wales rugby game on the sunday but when we asked what time it was on, they told us had been on the night before which was rubbish.
