G’day!
I cannot believe how fast this trip is going!! I already only have about 2 months left. That is crazy! My finals schedule came out this week and my last exam is on April 16, so I will be flying back home on April 20- scary!
I hope everyone had a great week and a great Valentine’s Day! I went with my room-mate to Hooters on Thursday for that lovely hallmark holiday- It was single’s night. I had never been there, so that was quite fun. On Friday, I went to Surfer’s Paradise with some friends to this club called Melba’s because professional surfers from the Quiksilver Surf Championship were going to be there, however, I didn’t see any. It was a fun atmosphere, but everything was way too pricy, so later, my friend and I walked to the beach because we wanted to see it at night. I think there is something so special about the ocean at night. I don’t really know how to describe it. Then we
walked around a little bit and explored the part of Surfer’s that we hadn’t seen yet.
Yesterday, I decided to go to Brisbane at the last minute.
A group of people were going to hear this Christian speaker that supposedly has healing powers. I thought it sounded a little sketch, but I decided to come because I really just wanted to see Brisbane afterwards. I felt bad because I had an ulterior motive, but nobody else really enjoyed it either, so it was all good. This guy didn’t even have a sermon; he just told us his life story and then asked for money. It was weird, so we peaced out early. I could go on and on about this guy, but I’ll spare you 😊
So after that lovely experience, my friend Sam showed us around the city of Brisbane. He is from there originally, so he knew where to take us. We were all starving, so we stopped for lunch in a rather strange part of town. I looked in this one restaurant that had Barbie doll heads in place of light bulbs on a chandelier! We didn’t eat there though. We ate at this authentic Greek restaurant and the food was absolutely amazing. All of us shared a meal-sampler. First we got pita bread with all different kinds of dip, followed by a
Greek salad, then fried calamari (the best I’ve ever had), and then chicken and beef kebabs for the main course. So delicious. After that, we headed into the main part of the city just to look around, site-see, and shop. A lot of people don’t like Brisbane because they say its boring. I really enjoyed it though, because I get sick of the Americanized version of Australia on campus, and everything is so international in Brisbane. It is kind of like a less busy version of Chicago. Towards evening, we left the city so we could go see the sunset at the top of a mountain. It was overcast, but still really pretty, especially after it got dark and you could see all of the city lights. It was a great day and I want to make sure I make it back sometime soon.
I finally figured out what keeps waking me up at the crack of dawn every morning--- Not a rooster, but Cockatoos! (you know, those white, parrot-like birds?). They are EVERYWHERE and they fly in flocks of like 50 or 60. The noise that they make is terrible! Here’s the best way to describe the sound
they make: You know on the movie Dumb and Dumber, when Jim Carey says, “Hey Harry, wanna hear the most annoying sound ever?” and proceeds to make an awful, horrendous noise? Yeah, well that’s what they sound like. Haha!!! Just had to share that tid-bit 😊
This morning was International Sunday at church, so everyone made things from their home country. I think they had about every single Asian dish you could ever want! It’s possible that I might be getting a little “curried” out because that’s practically all they have here! No complaints though, it’s yummy.
This coming week, I have my first two assignments due for my Disabilities class, so wish me luck! I am turning in a paper and doing a presentation on the same day!
Sorry this week’s blog was kinda boring!!
Until next time,
Kelly
