On 90 mile beach
August 13th- 14th.
The drive to Sydney
After looking at some maps, we decided to stay the night in a place called Lakes Entrance. It is a little town that is a holiday beach town. Since it is winter here we didn’t have a problem at all finding a room. We stayed at the Sandbar Motel. It was a nice motel, very clean, very cheap, and even included a full breakfast delivered to your room. It was only about a five minute walk at most into the main part of town, so we headed down there for lunch. The town is also a fishing town, so fresh, fresh seafood. After lunch we walked to the foot bridge that takes you onto a part of 90 mile beach. We walked along a path that was about 2km long along the large sand dune covered in a trees and plants. When we got towards the end of the part of land (90 mile beach is divided by waterways) we took the beach back. We were the only ones on the beach. The sun was setting over the sand dunes and there was a rainbow out over the Pacific Ocean. It was really beautiful
and peaceful. After the beach we went to the grocery store and stocked up on some food for dinner and of course beer. It was warm enough to sit outside for a while; in jeans and sweatshirts. The rain and cold is literally following us everywhere. We didn’t have internet so I played some card games and Mark watched the footie. There were 7 channels on the TV. Five of them had football (soccer), rugby, golf, baseball, and tennis on. The other was the E channel. So I tried my hardest to watch the “The Girls Next door” show. Sports won, hence the card games.
August 14, 2007 (Tuesday)
We woke up early and after brekkie, as the Aussies call it we started driving towards Tilba Tilba along the Princes Highway. It was a pretty drive and yes it rained for most of it. It is still following us. We now have a Toyota Camry and I am trying to keep my speed down. It actually has power compared to the little blue car. Along the road, I spotted a Kangaroo 20km ahead sign. The road on both sides were pretty much lined with eucalyptus trees, so I had mark
do Koala watch and I was on the lookout for Kangaroos. I spotted a bunch…..of brown shrubs that looked like Kangaroos but no Kangaroos. I think I scared Mark a bunch when I would scream “Kangaroo!!!” and then slam on the breaks. Luckily we were all alone on the road for most of the trip. We stopped for lunch at Meriumbula (I think). It was another nice little town. We really only stopped there because Mark had read on the map that there is a wildlife park. Finally, it is my chance to meet a real Australia kangaroo and a koala. And big shocker, we found out that it is closed on Tuesday’s, the only day it is closed. Lovely. Sydney zoo, here I come.
We are now currently in Central Tilba. Right down the street from Tilba Tilba. A lot of names here are doubled. It cracks me up. We are staying on the corner of the main street, possibly the only street, at the Two Story Bed and Breakfast. The B&B is really nice, very old. I think it was built in 1880’s. The main street is really great. There are little shops up and down the road.
90 mile beach
The four hours that it didn't rain on us in Australia Every shop is in an old building and all have pretty little gardens. It took us all of 5 minutes to walk up and down the main street. We arrived at 3:30 so we only made it into a couple shops. They all close at 4pm. There is one bar in town and a sign out front proudly states that it has 6 beers on tap. We will have to try it out. We are currently enjoying a relaxing time in Tilba as we expect Sydney to be non stop. Unfortunately we are finding that the rain is still with us. (The country was in a huge drought and we show up and rain, rain, rain) Every person we talk to has said the same thing, “oh it is such a pity the weather is poor, just last week it was so warm and sunny.” Just our luck. Hopefully Sydney will be nice and warm and we are pretty sure Ayres Rock will be hot.
