Ah! The sun! My friend we are re-united at last.
You may have guessed but here in Oz in December its bloody hot. But apparently according to the weather forecast its mild at the mo! My arse. I am perspiring from every pore in my body!
Yesterday was a crash and burn day. We were still on China time so went to bed late and got up late. But once up we wandered for a good five hours. We didn't get lost, we just were unsure of where we were at times, but thats the whole point! Some people will disagree but sometimes not knowing where you are is quite refreshing. We then thought "lets do something." So we did. We caught the city sightseeing tour around the city, saw the key places we wanted to see the next day and because our ticket is valid for 24 hours from purchase we could take the bus again the next day and jump off where we wanted and jump back on.
Earlier in the day we had decided that a BBQ was called for. So after we got off the bus we walked up to the shops and bought
some kangaroo steak, chicken, sausages and various other stuff for our bbq. After the killer walk back to the hostel we went onto the roof, where the bbq's are, and lit up! I was able to put my fine and astute cooking skills to good use, while Rob chilled out. It was amazing because as I cooked the sun was setting over the city and we caught some good pictures. After we had eaten we decided we would jsut chill on the roof with our books, some paper and ink, and some chilled out music with our Cicida friends in the background harmony.
Damn it! We hit bed late again. And it was hotter and harder to sleep. But we managed. I woke up at half seven and had a quick shower, before waking Rob up with cold juice and our brekkie bars. We live the high life! After this we checked out of this hostel, crossed the road and went ten doors up to our hostel for tonight, and checked in their. This place, it has gotta be said looks friendlier and nicer and more likely to have the bit more of a sense of community.
We
then got our skates on to get to the station to catch the bus to the maritime musuem. We had a good wander round the museum, looking at the various exhibitions before moving outside to have a look around
The Endeavour, HMAS Vampire and
HMAS Onslow . The ships and submarine moored ourside. It was really good looking around and we discovered that submariners probably had to be very short! As did the men that worked on
The Endeavour . Next we took the Monorail around the city centre and this gave us a great birds-eye view of the streets.
We caught the bus again and jumped off at circular quay in order to take a cruise around the harbour and stop off at For Denizon. Thanks to Rob we missed the stop for the Fort, even though i kept on saying, we need to get off! :P No problem! We spent two hours cruising around the harbour on the same boat until it took us to the Fort Denizon stop again, by which point we could have easily done the narrative for the guide! The Fort was, well, small. We knew this beacuse it
looked small, and it definately was not like the tardis. It was just small, consisting of little more than a rectangular perimeter wall, a single tower and a handful of smallish cannons, all in the same space as maybe my house. And to our dismay after spending two hours cruising around, we had to wait fifty mins on the island to catch the boat to escape.
A little background on the Fort for you. It was built during the Crimean war in case the Russians tried to attack Oz via Sydney. Three major things i should point out. The fort is tiny. Any attacking fleet would merely have to fart in it direction and it would be destroyed. The second is its a good few miles into the harbour so that should the fleet have got as far as the fort, it could probably have either caused significant damage to the area or even more simply landed further up the harbour, at one of the many bays and continued on foot. And perhaps the swing vote in deciding just how useless this Fort would have been if attacked by the Russians...It was completed until two years after the Crimean War had finished.
Anyway that by the by. We jumped back on the boat after having some munchies from the cafe and then headed back to the hostel after picking up so veg to go with our left over meat from yesterday. So we are going to have a cook up later, do some writing and try and get a reasonable bed time. There are too many clouds in the sky now, so a sunset is probably off the cards. Hoping the imminent storm will pass tonight so we can hit the beach with Mat tomorrow for his birthday.
Peace out and keep reading!
