17th December 2008 - SCARY DRIVE & ULLADULLA FUN!!!
The drive from Canberra back to the coast was the worst ever!!! The morning had been bright but once we were on the road the heavens opened and the rain lashed down so hard and so fast...only those wearing armour wouldn't have been hurt by it!!! As luck would have it, the roads were very steep declines with very tight bends down a mountain side. It was my day to drive too and after my accident where I aquaplaned on the motorway a while ago I really hate driving in the rain. Nat did offer to swap but I persevered and got through...just!!! At one point I was so clammy I looked like i'd been stood out in the rain for a while. My heart skipped a few beats as well at times and it truly was the scariest drive ever...for me anyway!!!
Once we arrived back at Batemans Bay the roads were a little better though the rain was still as bad...so much for sunshine!!! We continued on another 100km and stopped in the town of Ulladulla. Due to the weather we passed the evening by having tea in a
In Bannisters!!
We had our blankets over our knee...so cosy and slightly grandma-ish!!! local pub (homemade lasagne for me) and then we headed to a highly recommended bar called 'Bannisters' at Bannisters Point.
Such a nice bar....very swish!! It looked out onto the beach and sea and had an infinity pool right on the edge. It was still amazing in the drizzle but I would have liked to have spent a day there in the sun. We passed the time with sorbet and a glass of wine or 2. I resisted the amazing but incredibly expensive cocktails!!! The bar had no walls and as the night drew in and it got colder there were blankets around to put over your legs. So nice...everytone was huddled on sofas around the bar with blankets!! I really enjoyed the evening!! The only downside was that the Mosquitos were back!!! 3 bites and my first in OZ...I hoped there would be no more!!!
Following the bar it was off to sleep in a carpark......Chubbs really has seen some sights!!!
18th December 2008 - BEACH DAY....WOOHOO!!!!
The night was a bit mixed. I slept well (sure the wine helped) but woke a couple of times to the sound of the rain lashing down and the
sound of a horrendus squark wich sounded like a bird was being plucked alive somewhere!! Shame on you KFC!! Despite the interruptions I woke sprightly.....especially when I saw the sun had come out to play and the clouds were all hiding!!!
We were on Mollymook beach before 9.30am. The sea was a little cold but apart from that it was perfect....nice sand, not too busy and most importantly - no flies!!! We stayed there for a good few hours. The current and waves in the sea were so strong...at one pint a wave literally knocked me off my feet!!! Good fun splashing about and jumping in the waves. Nat even braved the Australian waters to come for a paddle!! Nice to be on a beach in the sun....at last!!!
At around 3pm after a light lunch of fruit and yoghurt we headed along the coat to Hyams Beach at Jervis Bay. Whitest sand in the world apparently and I must say...it was pretty white!! We messed about a bit trying to get a good 'Merry Christmas' photo and soaked up our own private beach!! It even had toilets and an overnight parking spot for the van!! In the
words of Delboy it was 'Perfic!!' (Apart from the lack of a Drover).
Just before bed we fancied a drink so we headed out in the van to find somewhere. We were unsucessful on the drink front but did come across a kangaroo or 50 on a school playing field. Such an amazing sight!!! Enjoyed today...not done much but nice for the sun to be out! Can't believe it's less than a week until christmas either!!
19th December 2008 - ON TO KIAMA
My nights sleep was a wonky one. The van was on a slope towards my side of the bed. At one pint I literally had my face pressed up against the side of the van!! It was definitely a struggle to stay put without sliding to the side!! The morning was bright though and after brekkie we headed straight onto the beach. Another couple of campers had turned up so not so private anymore but still nice. At around 10am the clouds appeared and so we thought it a good time to hit the road and move on to our next destination.
My turn to drive today...just a short one though to Kiama. Nice
Private Beach....!!
What a parking spot for the night!!! little town. We did a fruit shop and then tried to do a bit of christmas shop for our not so secret santa. I didn't find anything again and at this rate I will be nicknamed scrooge on christmas day!! Following our wander through town we visited the famous blowhole which did actually blow water right up into the sky...pretty impressive!! Following the blowhole it was pretty cloudy so I consoled myself with a 'Stairway to heaven' ice-cream....AMAZING!!! If the stairway to heaven tastes that good I won't be worried when my time comes!!! We then went and found a campsite!!
The campsite was called Kendalls Beach Holiday Park and was right on Kendalls Beach. By teh time we had parked up the sun had come out again and we headed to the beach for a few hours!! Such big waves again and a few pros were out surfing. I can't wait for my go...i'm itching to learn but not long to wait now!! Instead I had to make do with sunbathing, paddling and a bit of body surfing....not good for keeping the bikini bottoms up as I found out to my embarassment!!! Good job my feet were at
a ten to two position!!! Managed to get sand everywhere too and was thankful we were on a campsite and could have a shower when we came off the beach.
Didn't do much for the rest of the day....washed some clothes, read and relaxed in teh tv room with some other campers from the campsite. Gutted whenguy said TV room closed at 9.30pm because 'The Dark Night' started at 9pm....had to make do with 'The Hulk' instead...not quite the same as the caped crusader!!!
As I lay in bed before sleep thinking about pancakes I heard a kuffufle outside as 2 locals had a punch up. I couldn't nosy either as they were on the wrong side of the van and Nat was asleep!! Some of the verbal exchanges shocked me to the core!! It lasted about half hour before the comotion finally died down!! Only 5 days until christams too....they would be on Santa's naughty list!!!
20th December - BYE KIAMA
It was dull when I woke but I felt good and had slept well. Had loads of energy!! We stayed around the campsite for a few hours making the most of it...definitely best campsite so
far in terms of location and facilities!! From the campsite it was on to our hourly internet session in the library and then back on the road and heading to Wollongong!!!
