As the northern hemisphere rests embraced in subzero temperatures, the gleaming coast of Australia becomes ripe for sunny adventures. Going on a post-Christmas skiing vacation in the Land Down Under does sound like a long shot, but it is actually perfectly reasonable if you know where to go. On the other hand, it could be more prudent to wait for the mid-year in order to take full advantage of the southern hemisphere’s own full-blown snowy delights. No matter how you envision your winter adventure in Australia, here are the best ski resorts for your consideration.
Perisher (resorts)
The Australian Alps are pretty much the ultimate go-to region for avid skiers that want to spend some snowy time in the Land Down Under. It is mostly divided between Victoria and the New South Wales and it boasts some of the best ski resorts on this side of the globe. Perisher is located in Kosciusko National Park and it consists of four resorts/villages - Perisher Valley, Guthega, Smiggin Holes and Blue Cow.
Overall, this is an ideal playground for intermediate skiers, but if you are not overly experienced, it’s easy to find amazing programs for beginners. A word to the
wise - this is a costly destination, but if you are financially ready to splurge at Perisher Valley Hotel and enjoy fine dining at Snow Gums Restaurants, you will have an absolutely delightful time.
Thredbo Alpine Village
The subregion on the NSW side of the Australian Alps known as the Snowy Mountains holds some truly impeccable natural sites and wondrous resorts. Mount Kosciuszko (of the aforementioned national park) is the mainland’s highest mountain that reaches the height of 2,228 meters, so considering the altitude, there’s a high chance you’ll come across patches of snow all year long.
Ramshead Range near Thredbo’s picturesque Alpine Village is a potent stretch of land for off-season skiers. The only downside is that you have to bring your own equipment along because rental shops are closed for the period. Thredbo might be home to the longest ski run on the continent, and its resort is a convenient hub for a multitude of perilous trails, so if you are up for a challenge, arm yourself with
comfortable thermo-insulated snow shoes and UV-protection ski goggles and head into the wilderness. Apart from that, it is an enchanting backdrop with Alpine charm that is renowned for its top-notch
accommodations and 11 absolutely decadent restaurants.
Hotham Alpine Resort
Located in the state of Victoria, deep in the Alpine region, Mount Hotham is also known as the powder capital of Australia. You can catch a direct flight to this destination from Sydney or Melbourne, but it would be a real shame to miss out on the magnificent sight-seeing treat of the Great Alpine Road. It can be a fitting overture to the unforgettable escapade. If you want to test your skiing mettle
on the slopes of Hotham, you’ll have to plan your visit between June and September for the best snow-laden action. Mary’s Slide and the bumpy Blue Ribbon are opportune runs for advanced skiers, but you should definitely take it slow with this resort. Spend the first few days in Dinner Plain’s utterly charming village and savor its Victorian appeal.
Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort
Apart from the adorable name, Mount Baw Baw boasts a very convenient ski resort and
a wonderful getaway simply because it is located so close to Melbourne. It’s just two and a half to three hours away by car, or 120 kilometers, if the numbers are more palpable for you. The Baw Baw Plateau stretches north-east and it includes multiple scenic peaks, including the eponymous one, Mount Mueller, Mount Whitelaw and Mount St Gwinear, just to name the few. Apart from that, Mount Baw Baw offers a suitably mild set of trails, neither ominously vertical nor completely flat, and it is absolutely welcoming for total beginners. As such, Baw Baw is tailor-made for families with small kids.
People typically associate Australia with vibrant beaches, arid landscapes and lush forests. Rocky ranges and snowy mountaintops are usually the last things that springs into their mind, and yet the Land Down Under is also renowned for containing any sort of terrain imaginable. Since the tourism on the continent has started to boom, the Australian Alps have become a highly regarded destination by globe-trotting adrenaline seekers and vacationing families alike.
