Day 11 Fedrick Md – Lewisburg WV - mileage 305

We woke to massive thunderstorm which apparently caused lots of flooding in nearby DC. Our phones were screaming flash flood warnings every couple of minutes. We took our time eating and getting ready to let the storms pass so that we could pack the car without getting drenched. When it finally let up a little, we quickly packed the car and headed towards Harpers Ferry. It was still raining at Harpers Ferry, so we went onto Shepherdstown since we would have to head back thru Harpers Ferry anyway. During the trip, Claire worked in the back seat anytime there was cell service.

The road to Shepherdstown was our amusement ride for the morning – a narrow roller coaster type road thru the country side. They apparently just paved over the grass – up and down, up and down, around the corner. On the road, we passed by an interesting political sign and had to get a picture. When we got to town, the rain let up and we walked around the cool old village. Shepherdstown is the oldest town in West Virginia with buildings from the early 1700s and

Shepherdstown
was settled by the Germans. As we walked by a German bakery, it sucked us in. Then we saw the Rumsey Monument in honor of James Rumsey who invented the steamboat in 1787. We then saw the little house – it was a perfect house for Allie. We really liked Shepherdstown.

We then headed back to Harpers Ferry hoping that the rain would hold off. Luckily when we got there, it had. We stopped at several places in the park, but our longest stop was at the old town. We were able to walk out to the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and walk part of the Appalachian Trail across the bridge. We learned all about John Brown and his raid on Harpers Ferry. As we were heading to eat lunch, we saw the green pea soup slim in the Shenandoah Canal. Yuck, we would not EVER swim in that.

After lunch we took off on back roads weaving back and forth between Virginia and West Virginia. Susan was driving, and it was quite a road and Susan’s arms got a thorough workout. We road by streams, we went up mountains, we saw beautiful scenery, we

Shepherdstown
had NO cell service and we even had some rain. On the way we passed by the Homestead Hotel, Falling Springs waterfall, and the Greenbriar Hotel. We arrived in Lewisburg and checked in then changed to go eat at the General Lewis Inn. This was a farm to table restaurant in and old inn and it was wonderful.
