Dad, Stephen & Thomas
Could not leave Idaho without a daily group picture! We left Idaho Falls after 8:00. It was a pretty uneventful trip through Idaho..lots of potato fields for Thomas to drool over and we zigzagged across the Snake River. I didn't get a lot of pictures of interest from Idaho though! 😞 There was some interesting landscape though as occasionally you'd go from really nice farm land to what looked like an ancient lava flow..it looked like old road black top that kind of crumbled in the heat
Dad & I took turns driving all day on I-84... which was good because I was pretty tired and was having trouble staying alert. We crossed into Oregon and I was totally stunned..it was NOT was I was expecting to see! It looked very much like a desert, with mountain sized sand dunes! Very little vegetation. As I was driving dad was playing navigator and he was mapping out some alternate routes into Bend. There were a couple of easier ways that we had missed taking because we didn't do our usual morning map planning session!! So we stopped at a rest stop just outside of Baker City to go over the possibilities. I was a bit wary of the route he

...Had to get these for Thomas!! We could not stop and let him dig one though! suggested because from the map it looked like it would be coming through the mountains again and remember what happened the last time we took a "shortcut" in Wyoming and had to go through mountains.. While we were at the rest stop though, dad talked to a man who knew the route and he said it was more of driving through the basin of the mountain instead so we decided to take it.
Once we got through Baker City, it began to look more like what I expected Oregon to look like..statuesque pines and rolling hills..Very pretty. It took hours though to drive down to Redmond. We finally got in here about 8:30 pm..gaining another hour to Pacific time. We just went and ate some Pizza and crashed! We will now take a day or two to visit the family here and recover a bit before heading back east!
