Chair lift banter
Heading up the Snowshed chair in Killington, Vermont I have skied so so much here it has been awesome! Luckily I blagged some great skis and some ok boots so that was a welcome change to standard rental gear! (However...I will most definatly invest in my own gear soon...) The weather has been interesting...snow, sun, rain, ice storms, fog, -10 and +34...absolutely crazy weather! The snow did hold though so there was plenty of skiing to be had, just limited terrain at the end of the second week. Killingotn is a great resort...no mountains as such, just big hills! Apparently it has the biggest vertical drop in terms of top to the bottom of the resort which I could definalty realise as we raced all the way down and my ears were popping by the end of it! Speaking of racing down...I kind of think I may have gone a bit too fast this week. There were a few times when I thought "if I come unstuck now things would get ugly". Luckily though I have no (major) crashes to report. My skiing has improved a lot this year I think...basically because I have spent so much time on snow! The snow was great at the start but slushy towards the end of the days. The best runs I got were the ones at 9am each day...I was actually on the very first lift out of the resort today and yesterday! Fresh tracks all the way! After being here for quite a while I met a lot of people who worked in the resort and they are all cool and chilled out and I would not mind spending a season out here at all )or in any resort for that matter!). I tried a few runs thorugh the snow parks...with some jump attempts yeilding greater success rates than others but still all good fun. It has also been great to ski with my Dad out here...we got some awesome runs in together...the first time in many years. I also met some other guys out here, namely James and Dave and we have had some good laughs all this week. The skiing has been great and I am already looking forward to next season...when I will have my own...comfy ski boots! Dad and I have also been to some great dinners and restaurants out here. South Station, Sirloin Steakhouse and Dennys all served up so much food I nearly got to Las Vegas buffet levels of full that even made walking afterwards difficult. American portion sizes are just huge. I see it as quite an achievement myself! I have also been bowling this week...I got quite a few strikes...but I will be the first to say I am probably the world's least consistent bowler! Quote of the week: "Welcome to hotel rip off"...not related to me, my hotel or anything like that...but a line James said in a bar one night actually made me laugh non-stop for ages. It is probably one of those "you had to be there" moments which I guess is true, the build up was just as funny, but that line was quality. Just thought I would share that little bit of laughter with everyone. I have stayed in two places, the Grey Bonnet Inn and the Mountain Inn. Both good places and good food. Yet even now, after two weeks, I am still finding it difficult getting used to staying in a hotel instead of a hostel! Not used to having beds made and getting free shampoo...more used to being woken up by a snoring Dutch guy or a squeeky bunk bed that has no side to it! Also the guy who works the bar at the Mountain Inn is an awesome photographer and I saw some of his work and no joke it is really good. Check it out at www.garrenteephotography.com...quite a lot are of Vermont as well. All in all I have fully loved my time out here. The skiing has been aweosme and Killington is a great resort and the Rutland area is good fun too. I still get suck a kick out of seeing new places, trying new things and meeting new people. It is what travellinng is all about and I could never get bored of it even if I treid. I particularly enjoyed mine and Dad's day out in Woodstock and doing the East Fall and Rime ski runs in the afternoons in the sun...not crowded and still good snow. Speaking of ski runs...if you ever ski out here...Cascade and Ovation are super...crazy steep, double black diamond runs. Just go for it. "Don't be afraid to ride the light!" On Easter Sunday it was +32 on the bottom slopes so (as you will be able to see in the photos) I skied for the first time in shorts! It was good fun...but the snow hurt when it sprayed up on your legs! So...on Thursday...I leave the ski resort and I am heading for a long weekend in New York City!
