San Fran to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) was the order of the day. Paranoid about being dumped from US flights got the 8.15 BART so was at airport before 9am fro 10.25 flight (unusual for me). American seem to fly the oldest airframes in the business – MD80 – that a DC9 like Ansett used to fly! The flight is 3 ½ hrs and they give you a can of pop – you are hardly done by on QF with dinner on domestic flights!
Into DFW and bused (free) to the Remote South (carpark). Altho th trinity Railroad Express (TRE) runs Dallas-Ft Worth M-Fr + Sat (no Sun) with almost a 2 hr gap decided to try the 408 bus from there, change to 409 later. The bus was sitting there but left 10 mins late. All around the world in general direction of Dallas fro a $4 all day ticket. A quick wait for the 409 which then only went 500yards or so to the DART station! – at least my DART ticket works there. Fortunately a 15 min. wait only as just missed one. This took me downtown to West End and then legged it to the Hotel Adolphus
American flight AA1964 to DFW
where Ansett sold their old planes?? (only took me about 3 hrs from touchdown!). On the way got cautioned by a Dallas policeman about not waiting for the cross now! – there was no traffic coming and it was 6.30pm Sat. downtown. When I asked him he did not even know the cash penalty for such an infringement – they warn not prosecute. Nothing better to do as there were 4 of them on bikes. The room was 450sq.ft I think – see pic.
Off for a wander down those streets, Main St, then into Houston, then Elm – and then Deeley Plaza. Having watched 2 JFK specials in Nov. it all seemed so familiar. Its quite spooky and very affecting I must say.
Then off in search of dinner. I ended up at “celebrity chef” Stephan Pyle’s on Ross St, fort. not too far away. He is well known for his ceviche (marinated raw fish). You could get 3 for $26 – but settled for the ahi tuna (merely from Hawaii – the bronzino was from the Mediterranean – oh those food miles!) for $10. This was served in a glass dish on ice – delicate chunks of fish with some BBQ orange

kinda luxurious - could get used to it slices on top and a delicate marinade. The perfect starter. Enjoyed with a rich creamy Californian chardonnay. I was looking to have a steak – but decided to have the short rib of beef which sounded more interesting. For a slowly cooked cheap cut of beef this was sensational! A huge bone sticking out of meat that was just melting off in chunks. This was on a bed of reimagined dark (Mexican style refritos?) beans – lentil colour but. And some slashes of a brightish green sauce containing ? – new South West cuisine indeed. An older (2005) Californian syrah with that. It had all gone so well I ordered Stephan’s Heaven and Hell cake. Had to take a snap of this – there was peanut butter-like in one layer, chocolate and choc ganache on the outside. And NO coffee! This cost me with a (good for me) tip - $100. But it was well worth it.
