Day 5 July 13th The Black Hills,Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument, SD & Devils Tower,WY
What a day! We woke up in Keystone,SD and drove thru the Black Hills and the wild life loop in Custer State Park. We saw antelope, fed the begging burros, found a prairie dog town, saw some Buffalo, and went thru some hair raising tunnels and twisting and turning steep roads. Phil is doing awesome driving! We then headed to the Crazy Horse National Monument. We learned so much about Crazy Horse and the indian tribes in the area. It is a work in progress still today. It is impressive but will be unbelievable when it's done. It is so huge that the 4 Presidents on Mount Rushmore would fit behind his ear! We entered Wyoming and saw some unbelievable thunder storms in the distance. Luckily while driving we only experienced a few raindrops and some wind. When we got to the campsite we saw a huge RV that had come in from the other way that had got hit by softball size hail that trashed the top of his RV, broke the lights and everything. We were able to pull in just before
the rain hit. No power at the entire campground due to the storm. The campground sits right at the base of Devil's Tower. We waited out the rain for just a bit and then was rewarded with a beautiful rainbow. Once it cleared up we got on the scooter and rode it the 3 miles up to Devil's Tower. It was about 8 pm. It was very quiet and what a site! We walked the 1 1/2 mile loop around the monument and saw indain prayer cloths and close up views of the monument. We rode back down as it was getting dark. We had so much fun on that scooter-thanks Beth! They showed "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" on an outdoor patio as the movie was shot right here in the campground! Leftovers for dinner, now it' s time for bed. On to Yellowstone tomorrow!!!! We love you all!
