Old mile posts tell me Wheeling, WV is just down the road...yay!
Day 46 Hebron, OH to Wheeling, WV
Total Miles: 107.4 (3242.3 miles to date)

Today we were hoping to get to the Ohio border in order to get a fresh jump on Pennsylvania. It was another really hot and humid day but again we managed to outrun and stay clear of the bad weather that some people said might develop in the afternoons. We continued on down the National Road and I was really admiring and taking pictures of old "S Bridges" and remenants of the old brick roads all while riding the pleasantly rolling hills that we thought were sure to be indicitive of what was to come. Then maybe some 40 miles into the day my right shifter totally broke and stopped working leaving me stuck with my 3 front gears and of course my 1 rear gear. I ended up spending a lot of time out of the saddle today grunting over hills and really missing all of those gears I had been taking for granted. We also made a few errors in direction today which ended up adding to our mileage. In the end we pushed hard and made Wheeling, WV by nightfall and I was

lucky to find a bike shop in the phone book that was just 7 miles down the road in the direction we were headed. Tommorow would be a late start while we waited for the shop to open and hoped they had the parts I needed.

Wheeling itself is in the little panhandle of WV and it's kind of sad to see what must have at one point been a grand and majestic city that is now run down like so many others we have seen. It used to be a major shipping center and was the original terminus of the National Road at a time when the country went only as far as the Ohio River. We got to cross the Ohio River on a really neat old suspension bridge and actually found a cheap hotel overlooking the river. We were fast asleep after a hilly 100+ miles. Tommorow will be a shorter day for sure.
