June 5 saw us arrive at camp in North Carolina. After a couple of days settling in we volunteered to help set up camp, mainly putting together foosball and air hockey tables. The first 5nights also saw us and a bunch of others at the local Mexican Restaurant drinking 34oz (about 1 liter) mugs of beer for only $4, BARGAIN!!!!!!!! On the Sunday we finally saw the kids arrive for the first of 2 x 25 day sessions. Mick had his own cabin of 12 kids, 2 co-counselors and a CIT (counselor in training). All the boys had their own individual personalities and all were not quite what you would expect from 10 and 11 year old boys. By that we mean that they didn’t really throw rocks or like to hit things. Although they weren’t ... read more

8 staff members were left to help run a series of mini camps. The first was a day camp from Florida which comes to North Carolina for a week of fun and games as an end of summer treat. We then had two sessions of D.A.R.E. camp, which is run and paid for by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department. It is generally for kids from underprivileged backgrounds that are hand chosen by their teachers to attend. All these kids had a great time and were so appreciative for everything that was provided for them. It was a lot of fun though working on the Iceberg and Blob all day as they were definitely 2 of my favourite activities during the summer. A 275 pound policeman blobbed both Hayley and Mick into next week, which was heaps ... read more

May 18 - June 3, 2006 Biloxi, Miss. - Hendersonville, N.C. 9,246 miles to date 1,490 miles this leg Apologies for technical difficulties that delayed the posting of this entry... On May 18, Jeff and I celebrated our four-year wedding anniversary with a significant outing: we went sailing for the first time since leaving Port Townsend. Jeff later argued that it wasn’t really sailing because we didn’t actually set sail. I wonder that after four years of marriage, he doesn’t know better than not to argue with me! Our three-hour cruise on Biloxi Bay was made aboard the Glenn L. Swetmann, one of two replica wooden oystering schooners owned by the Biloxi Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum. The waterfront museum was sadly leveled by Hurricane Katrina, but the two vessels safely rode out the storm tucked ... read more
