Rainbows & Red Skies
Wonderful Summer Days Hello - Hello - Hello. How have all of you been? We hope each of you have had a warm & sunny & happy summer. We've missed our daily visits with you. It's been so long since I've written on this blog site, I almost forgot my password to get on. Fortunately, I keep a 2 page reference list of passwords.....there has to be a better way. A couple of the trees around us have just started to change color. The brilliant, yellow goldenrod are blooming on our backyard trail. Noooooo - we know what that means. Good-bye, Summer! Where did it go? Actually, our weather remains warm with sunny blue skies...I always say "another Florida sky". Beautiful glowing, red skies end the days. Wonderful....we savor each and every moment of it. It's important to take this time to appreciate these good moments because they are the ones we too often just take for granted. Our summer has been busy and exhausting...must be why it seems to have passed so quickly. We've decided to try to cut back some with our "antique" hobby. We will not return to Brimfield. It was a lot of fun but oh, a lot of work, also. We will miss it and the friends we would see there. Instead, we "remodeled" our booth in our Co-Op in Salamanca. We took 20 boxes of "smalls" out of the booth, leaving room for the bigger items with better display. We still have our display case there for smalls. We remarked the items removed and took them to a Flea Market (at 3:30 AM to get a good spot) in Avon, NY. We sold quite a bit but still have more to sell. We have been working like mad dogs putting items on EBay. It's been slow this summer but bit by bit, we continue to move some of our wares. We would like to find a close-by, one day, indoor antique show to sell some of our better treasures. We have only gone to a couple auctions....that helps to keep our inventory in check. A recent auction had thousands of great items that sold reasonably....we did buy some things but it was a real temptation not to buy more.
We had a big yard sale in July. We used to have one every year but lately, I have just sent stuff down to our daughter, Our Yard Sale
One tiny corner of our sale. Lory, for her sale. We decided we just had too much stuff and needed to have our own sale. So much work....do people realize what goes into a yard sale? I don't know. We watched on TV the other night, the show "Garage Sale Wars"..... wow...what prices they ask. Our sale was like "The Give-Away" sale! Lory came down and helped us which made it easier. It was well worth the effort. We made over $1,000 with no set-up or lodging charge. Still a lot of work!
Our demanding tasks did not end there. After Nate (our Mennonite carpenter) remodeled one of our upstairs bedrooms, we (me) thought we should fix up the other bedroom, too. Cory rebuilt the closet and touched up the wear and tear spots around the room. Next week, we are having a new carpet put down in the room. Before the carpeting, I suggested we empty our attic which is accessible only through this room. We had a new roof put on the house last year so I knew the stuff in the attic would be covered with a ton of grit...I was right. What a mess! Fortunately, some of the boxes had been Auction Time
Great Stuff covered with plastic ... some not. Of course, it is just a crawl space attic so Cory felt like Quasimodo when he finished. All sorts of goodies were brought out - including my wedding dress....remember my pink Jackie Kennedy style chemise worn at our North Carolina elopement? It still had a little gold pin on it...aaaahhhh. Sad, however, the mice found my dress and took some of the bottom for their nest. It looks like it would fit only my shadow but Lulu insisted on trying it on. She is still a big show-off.
Spaced in between our laborious chores, our festive (not!) summer has been filled with dental & medical visits. I finally got my tooth crowned...remember the loss of more than half my tooth (you can call me Spike) on our journey home from Florida. The cavern has been filled and repaired. My fun didn't end there.....I had my routine (every 5 year) colonoscopy. That's always a special treat. The ordered prep was more palatable but the results were still as arduous (that's putting it mildly). Fortunately, the test remains negative. Since both my parents had colon cancer, I am always very relieved with that result. No sense letting the pleasantries end here. I had to see a urologist for hematuria (blood in urine). It happened after lifting heavy boxes but I still had to have a renal ultrasound and cystoscopy. Luck was with me, again. Nothing showed up so the Doctor had to agree (not easily) with my diagnosis (lifting heavy boxes). Cory wasn't left out of the fun & games. He had his yearly prostate exam by his urologist. Okay in that department and he wants no further discussion or description made about it. His left shoulder has pained him for a year so he recently saw an orthopedic doctor. Planning on rotator cuff surgery, he had to have an arthrogram and MRI.....neither being something he wants to repeat anytime soon. Surprise....the doctor feels that the cortisone injection he gave him may help more than surgery at this time. So, we've survived for another year. God, it's hell to get old!
January, and our move to Florida for the winter months, can't come any too soon. We need to rest! We are pooped! We need our R&R! We are so glad we have that on our horizon....something great to look forward to. If you don't want to receive my many epistles from Florida, let me know and I'll remove you from the mailing list. It won't hurt my feelings....I know what it's like to get a lot of junk mail. We have a really big event planned once settled in Florida.....stay tuned if you want to find out what it is.
Hopefully, your summer has been spent doing enjoyable activities rather than copying any of our agenda. We still have a few more months left to savor some good times.....Lulu is weary from all the probing, prodding tests and work-tasks that have occupied so much of her sunny summer. She's ready to break loose and run free (if she had legs). She's ready to "Let The Good Times Roll".....bring 'em on. Our wish for you is to stay happy & healthy and, as always, stay in touch! It's great being surrounded by friends and family. Happy Days!
