Hello Hello my Xmas in NY installment for you all.
I leave Jacksonville at 75 degrees and Im warm in a long sleeve shirt however I have packed another shirt to go on top of it and then a massive ski jacket which Im quickly getting sick of carrying around the airport. In true US style no one listens to boarding instructions so we leave 25mins late due to impatience and people not understanding that their ticket that says 7A does not equate to boarding with rows 15-24...who would have thought? Coming over New York I start eyeing my ski jacket which I am grateful for already. The whole state is covered in snow and the pilot kindly says that it 40 degrees and raining YAY. I get a cab from JFK to Manhatten and the cabbie is great giving me a guided tour and pointing out everything he can.
Traffic is amazing and people are everywhere honking and yelling (my sort of drivers). Glad the hire car thought never popped into my mind. So I arrive at Jonnos place in the Upper West side and to put it in perspective he pays the same rent as I and
has less then a quarter of my space.... welcome to NY. After grabbing a much needed beer and trudging down the stairs we notice the light rain droplets and it springs to mind an umbrella might be needed. Looking up at the 5 flights we have just descended we decide no no its ok we'll be fine. In the light sprinkle we walk to Columbus square and head to the subway to get NYs best burger. After being hustled by ticket merchants we end up hustling them and with five hand changes of money we are swiftly making our way through the subway realising we have not paid these dubious looking men and they have not figured it out. Burger place is closed and its pissing down so we keep walking my ski jacket is amazing but Im starving and my jeans are wet. We end up in a french restaurant (amazing food and service) and the lady next to us snorts the whole way through the meal its disgusting yet funny all at once. We then walk back (rain has gone) through Times Square people everywhere and back through Broadway.
Next day is Xmas day so we head
to Chelsea and the empire diner which has been in many TV shows and movies......after being considered grinch like I chose a turkey burger to quiet the call. After that we headed down to the Meatpacking District and through Grenwich Village and the lower West Side passing Empire State Building on the journey. Having misplaced his credit card we head to the last place he had it and then to Zabars, one of NYs most famous delis. There are people everywhere and you cant move (insert frustrated face) however we got some amazing produce. After that we head to Central Park and walk around and its absolutely picturesque, people ice skating and the park is wonderful, no wonder people rave about it. Next we headed to 5th Ave and saw the ridiculously overpriced stores (kara you would love it) and the thousands of people walking around Xmas day...absolutley packed. The Rockerfeller Centre complete with Xmas decs and another ice skating rink. Its then to Little Itlay for dinner and an over indulgence in Chiantin followed by a few bars for some drinks heading back via Broadway Soho, Noho and what used to be Studio 54.
After Xmas I headed
out on my own through Downtown. Canal St, Madison Sq Garden, East Village, Macys and then via the Brooklyn Bridge. Back to the the Upper West Side for a Mexican Dinner and then another bar. Next day determined to see as much as I could we headed Uptown including Harlem and Columbus University back through central park at this stage freezing our asses off!!! Dim Sum for lunch and a quiet sat night watching movies. Sunday its time to walk the 911 site over the Brooklyn bridge and eat the worlds greatest pizza. The line up was 45mins to get in but so very worth the wait. Its claimed as the best Pizza in NY and its the best I have ever had. Full of pizza we head back and decide to grab a show on Broadway for the night which is Chicago. Great performance and we finish with a few drinks and my time in NY has come to an end. NY is a great city very busy and with over 3 million people living there and another 3 million that commute from the surrounding burroughs its always busy. There is always something to do and with cops everywhere
it is a safe and amzing city.
Do I like NY....definately, would I live here probably, would the weather deter me....maybe, the cost of living........is high but you can do it on the cheap. 6 Days in NY did I see it all, not likely....will I head back next year for summer....oh yes. Apparently its stinking hot and disgusting, my type of weather!!!
The island is 12 miles long and only 3miles across. The whole CBD of Sydney would fit in one Avenue plus a little.
I had a blast and hope that if you get the chance, go.
