Quotations:
The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach - waiting for a gift from the sea. Anne Morrow Lindbergh
The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea. Isak Dinesen
Battle Row Campground was chosen as our destination because of its proximity to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the U.S. At the time of our visit, the home was closed to visitors due to restoration efforts. The area is Oyster Bay located on the Long Island Sound, NY. We explored the natural grounds, visited the museum, and located the burial sites...of both Teddy and his wife Edith. This "Summer White House" was where the Roosevelt Family felt most at home. Also close to Battle Row is a lovely bike trail located in Beth Page State Park. We enjoyed a wonderful ride with just enough up-hills to make it interesting. This beautiful spring day Mother Nature put on a grand show ...with flowers, trees, and plants just budding. All was well ...until the rain came. In this same
general area of NY, we found The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site. Whitman worked at various times as a printer, a schoolteacher, a journalist, a volunteer nurse during the Civil War, a newspaper publish and an author/poet. The original home is very well preserved, and decorated with nineteenth century furnishings, and 130 Whitman portraits. Our last stop was Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum. This 24 room mansion offers a glimpse at the life of a privileged family from the Jazz Age through the Second World War. This is just the summer get away home.
