Obfuscator writes: We woke up to a thick layer of frost over everything. I guess I should be getting used to this, since it is January. Nevertheless, we're finding that camping in the extreme cold holds very little appeal. I think Onaxthiel spent most of the night shivering. I gradually added more layers through the night, which helped a lot, but made me very reluctant to crawl into the 10ish degree outside in the morning. Being in the middle of a big snow-covered State Park with nothing to see did nothing to encourage us to linger further, so we packed up our stuff, and headed out to Lincoln and beyond. We drove through Kansas, which was pretty uneventful with the exception of the sunflowers and the worlds largest ball of twine! NEBRASKA!! First off, I was in three states today that I never thought I would be in: Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska…. There is A LOT of corn in Nebraska! We drove to Kearney (where Jared grew up) and he showed me the house he lived in until he was seven, then we went over to the farm house that he spent most of his childhood in. It was just what I’d imagined it to be…right down to the tire swing out front. He showed me the tree that he planted when he was a child….from there we went into town, and I bought a t-shirt at the University of Nebraska @ Kearney. It was my ... read more

To those we leave behind... Yes, it is finally here.... The day we start the "fun" segment of The Odyssey. The day started off slow, finalizing the packing of the truck, thinking of those few things that we were sure we had forgotten and then confirming that we hadn't forgotten them, making final adjustments to the dog pen and packing the food - complete with fresh tomato's from Carl's dad's garden and freshly boiled eggs! Final goodbyes were made, albeit telepathically to Dawson (left) as we thought that might help him acclimatize... Then we were off!... Well not quite - we had a quick stop at FedEx in Manhattan, KS to collect the locking skewers for the bike racks and then the mini-storage to cover our stuff with plastic...
