Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villian

Christopher Columbus, a man known for adventure and bravery, is being questioned by historians on whenever or not he should be celebrated as a hero. Historians find new pieces of evidence revealing Columbus's true identity: not a heroic identity. Historians found out that during Columbus's journey there was chaos and brutality because the first time Columbus met the Native Americans, he forced them into christianity and used them as slaves during the era in which slavery trade was starting to grow internationally.

In my opinion I belive that Christopher Columbus should be known as a man of history because he did make history when he discovered America, but should not be celebrated as a hero in the U.S. Many people might label him as a hero for discovering America, or as a villian for being forcing the Natives to slavery. I think of Columbus as a man with flaws like everyone else, but I do have doubts when the idea of celebrating him as a national hero comes in mind.

This relates to what I have been learning in class because we had to decide, individually, on whenerver or not Hernando Cortes was a hero depending on which view we decide to look at. This is the same with the Columbus issue because some historians are saying that Columbus is not a hero because of their point of view.
