The Columbus Controversy talks about Columbus Day and the history of why we as Americans still celebrate it today. Considering a number of Christopher Columbus's actions when discovering the new world, The question has rang: Should we actually be celebrating him? When he came onto the new land he claimed as his own, he enslaved many native Americans and forced them to do their labor in exchange for money. He also forced the people who lived there to convert to Christianity. Many of the Native Americans were killed due to labor or disease. Eventually he was put on trial by people who finally stood up against him, and he was sent back to his home land. This is a large issue because this so called hero is still celebrated even though people figand ht against having him as part of the school ciriculum and a national holiday.

I feel like Columbus day should not be a national holiday. I don't feel like someone should get a positive holiday for doing bad works. He is recognized as a hero when in all actuality he took away the land, lifestyle, and rights of other people. I feel like he should still be taught about, because it was an important act in history, but he should not be praised as a hero when his bad actions out-weighed any good that could have come from finding a new land.

This article relates to class because we have been learning about new discoveries by people and how things change over time, based on decisions of people who are in charge. It also shows how ideas are spread throughout contineints. It connects to class when learning about people in their Native country and their ideas and values
