As with any adventure, a lot of the fun is in the knowledge you usually unintentionally acquire. I was talking to my Dad who happens to fly planes for a living. We were talking about where a flight from Chicago to Shanghai (ORD to PVG) will take us.

Planes get you to places not only because they're very very fast, but also because they fly the shortest distance between two points (aka a straight line). Since the Earth is a sphere our particular flight plan takes us over the Northern edge of Alaska. We'll be sure to peek out the window from time to time mid flight and see if we catch any snowy peaks.

Here is a photo of the flight plan I generated from gcmap.com. The persepective is basically from the center of the flight path which is looking down essentially onto the North pole. Neat.
