Route 66 starts in Chicago, and though the original downtown alignment is long buried under decades of new development, it's a great place to kick off the tour. For us East Texans though, that means a solid 950 miles before we can set out on historic 66. Of course, any road trip you embark on inevitably takes on it's own character after a few miles. Saturday, October 10th, we left Nacogdoches and drove to Memphis, TN. We arrived just in time to see the Peabody Duck March at the Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis. Now, if you've just tilted your head like a confused dog, don't worry. I had no clue what the duck march was either. Apparently since 1940, the ritzy Peabody hotel has carried on this tradition of walking their family of ducks from the roof, to the elevator, then down a red carpet to the indoor water fountain. After a long day of swimming, they are escorted from the water fountain, past hundreds of spectators, to the elevator, and finally to the roof for the night. It's a ducks life, but I think I could handle it. For more info read all about the Peabody Duck March
