Fields of Sunflowers along the highway
Hi, everyone,

Not too much new here, although we saw some pretty neat things while we were on the road that we wanted to share with you. On Saturday we drove from Rapid City, South Dakota to Council Bluffs, Iowa, which is right across the river from Omaha, Nebraska. Tom thought it was pretty cool when he kept seeing sweatshirts and other things with "SDSU" emblazoned on them. In this case however, it stood for "South Dakota State University" NOT San Diego State. One of the things we thought was really pretty on this drive has been has been the flowers. We've seen lots of black-eyed Susans, and at one point there were fields and fields of sunflowers. As we approached Mitchell, SD, and saw advertisements for the Corn Palace, we knew we had to stop! As luck would have it, they were also having the Corn Palace Festival, which didn't mean a whole lot to us except that we were able to buy a bag of kettle corn for the road. The Corn Palace itself was pretty amazing....think Rose Parade floats, except two-dimensional and all made of corn. Later we saw that it was listed in the book "1000 places to see in the U.S. and Canada". Yesterday we just took it easy and did a couple of loads of laundry. No, I don't look quite like that, but lots of time I am juggling the trip tik, the Garmin, and playing DJ with the Ipod. Iowa had some of the prettiest rest stops we've ever seen, and today we ate our picnic lunch at one of them. This is for you, Liane & Marcia and any other of my quilter friends: this same rest stop was decorated with quilt square tiles, and an explanation of how they were used as a sort of signaling system in the Underground Railroad. Who knew? We got here to Joliet about 3 pm, and are off tomorrow to take a boat tour on the lake in Chicago, and to see whatever we can see of downtown. Talk to you later. Hugs, Tom & Nancy
