Here is a little blast into the future of the city of Cahokia. Cahokia towards the end of the 1300s began shrinking in population size until it eventually disappeared. It has been theorized that factors such as overhunting, deforestation, flooding, or invasions may have occurred leaving Cahokia to be abandoned. It is currently now a preserved historical park and covers 2,200 acres of land and contains about 80 human made earth mounds (40 less than there initially were at its peak.) It is also a designated state protected area and one of the 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the US. The site is open to the public though and people are welcome to take tours through the territory.
