We awoke pretty early, around 5:30 am, not because we wanted to beat the rest of our group to breakfast but because we wanted to watch the inauguration. Breakfast could wait till 8:30 and our bus to the airport didn't leave until 10:30. So we tuned in to TV and watched the lead up to the big event. Some ultra-right wing commentators had been saying what a tragedy it would be if Obama became President. Some even went so far as to say he should not be allowed, that they hoped he would be assassinated before the inauguration. Friends in rural areas of Wisconsin really believed there would be serious assassination attempts, based on how some of their neighbors were talking. I wasn't holding my breath . . . exactly . . . till 7 a. ... read more

Day 6: Tuesday Today was Obama’s inauguration day as the 44th president of the United States and the streets were full of tourists and locals wearing T-shirts with Obama slogans. By the time we were ready and out, the inauguration was over in Washington DC because of the 5 hour time difference. If we were in NY, watching the ceremony would have been a priority. But we were not at all drawn to the moment in history, as our mind was filled with the beauty of Hawaii. This was the last day of our vacation. We drove over to the North shore to Haleiwa for our Shark adventure cruise. We checked in as suggested in Pier 35 at the harbor and 2 guys - Tim and Scott took us out on their sailboat. It was a ... read more

Day 5: Monday Hanauma bay was recommended to us as the best place to do snorkeling and also to see a large variety of marine life. So that was the first on our agenda for the day. This time, I was determined to snorkel as we were nearing the end of our vacation. We took Kalanianaole highway, another scenic route, and entered Hanauma bay, parked our car and learnt that they limited the number of visitors into the bay each day to protect the fragile marine life. The view of the bay from top was superb. Niki and I couldn’t wait to get into the water. But first, we had to watch a 10 minute video about how the bay was not a beach park for beach sport, but a natural preserve for marine life. We ... read more

Rob had to return to Hilo to lead another shorter Elderhostel so we sadly say "Aloha" and "Mahalo" ("thank you"). Susan and Rob made a great pair during the past week. Both are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced with everything from every kind of work people can do on the islands to the inner workings of the National Park Service! We were grateful to have had him along. After a buffet breakfast (meals at the hotels so far had been generous buffets which fueled our extensive walks), we rode to the Kona Historical Society site. Marty describes this visit very well at http://www.travelblog.org/North-America/United-States/Hawaii/Big-Island/Kailua-Kona/blog-372748.html I would add that during the visit, I usually carried the camera, Ann's purse, and my own bag with binoculars and other stuff. I confess that I felt a real affinity to the "Kona ... read more

This morning we boarded our motorcoach and set out to discover The Vibrant History of Kona. First is The Kona Historical Society's Living History Farm where we meet 2 ladies dressed in long calico dresses - the style of the 1820's. We hear about the early introduction of coffee to Kona by an American missionary in 1828. Kalukalu was the orignal Hawai'ian name when Englishman, Henry Nickolas Greenwell (HNG) purchased a section of land (1850) in the district of South Kona. Native forest and farmland stretched from the coast to the foothills of Mauna Loa. Hawai'ians planted food crops in the shade of the kukui and 'obi'a trees. Grass houses were a common sight and everyone spoke the Hawai'ian language. Young HNG found Hawai'i's fertile soil and mild climate much to his liking. Previous to 1850, ... read more

Alooooha! Here are the Christmas pictures. I know this post is a little out-dated by now, you can thank the black-out, the fact that I had to wait for Andrea T and Ron to upload them and mail me a CD because the files were too big to email, and my own laziness :) Anyway- Hope everyone is enjoying 2009. All is going good on my end. Pretty rainy out here, but can't really complain. Happy MLK day :) Love and miss yas Allison ... read more

Finally after rearranging our flight to go through Sydney rather than Fiji we touched down in Honolulu a day later than planned but avoided getting stranded in Fiji. It was a 20 hour trip with our last flight being 10 hours but it went smoothly and Hawaii was lovely. We arrived very early in the morning but managed to check in shortly after arriving at the hostel. Dan had treated us to a studio, which gives us our own kitchen and we were lucky to have a flat screen TV with the highly addictive American cable!!! During the day we chilled on Waikiki Beach and in the evening tried to buy some food at the supermarket but couldn't find it so had a KFC, oopsie. Much better than the Australian KFC - urgh! Never have it ... read more

Susan had planned a snorkeling day for us but the winds and high surf were not cooperating and Kahalu'u Bay was closed. We were disappointed. Susan tried to "sweet talk" our way in but the life guards were having none of it! So we went back to Kona Resort and changed into street clothes - we were dressed with swim suit under shorts and T to be prepared to snorkel! There was a short "rest" period during which Susan learned Kahalu'u Bay was now opened - High winds and surf had died down. Being very close to our scheduled time for lunch at Keauhou Beach Resort, we went to lunch. Susan said perhaps we could go back to snorkel in the later afternoon after our walking tour of historic of Kailua-Kona. On the walking tour, we ... read more

The waves were still pretty high in the morning. All the safe seats were taken when we came down for breakfast so we got to sit next to the taped off area beyond which wave splashes gleefully glistened on the tables and chairs. We never were able to get there earlier than the whole group even though we were never late! Susan referred to our group as the "Energizer Bunnies." A frequent feature of ancient and contemporary architecture in Hawai'i is being open to the outside. There are no mosquitoes in Hawai'i. There are "no-see-'ems" but the ocean breezes frequently kept the dining areas, lobbies, and bars free of annoying bugs. That also means cold fronts can chill even the most pleasant venues. But this is Hawai'i and so the sun quickly warms us. (As I ... read more

Day 4: Sunday A local friend that we made during our customary night walks on Waikiki beach recommended us to try out breakfast at Sarento’s, top of the Waikiki Ilikai beach hotel and he gave us free invitations for Sunday breakfast that was otherwise not available, as the restaurant is open normally only for dinner. The ride up in the glass elevator to this restaurant was an event in itself, and the romantic view from there, of the Diamond Head crater, Waikiki beach and Honolulu’s skyline was a treat in itself. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, pastries and muffins complimented with fresh tropical fruit and tropical fruit juices. Niki had a 1 pm appointment for swimming with the dolphins at the Sea Life Park, so we rescheduled our shark adventure to Tuesday. ... read more
